Bassetts Ice Cream Introduce
bassetts ice cream philadelphia
For generations of Pennsylvanians, the name Bassetts Ice Cream is synonymous with a delicious, high-quality, and deeply nostalgic treat. Nestled within the bustling and historic Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia, this iconic establishment is far more than just a place to grab a scoop; it's a living piece of the city's history and a testament to enduring quality. The friendly and professional atmosphere, combined with a commitment to traditional recipes and local ingredients, has made Bassetts a cherished destination for residents and visitors alike. This article is designed to provide a comprehensive look at what makes this ice cream shop a true local gem, from its storied past to the delightful flavors that keep customers coming back for more.
The story of Bassetts Ice Cream begins long before its current location. Founded in 1861 by Lewis Dubois Bassett, the company holds the prestigious title of America’s oldest ice cream company. Initially churning ice cream with the help of a mule in New Jersey, Bassett soon brought his popular product to the farmers' markets of Philadelphia. The immense popularity led to the establishment of a store in the city in 1885. A few years later, in 1892, Bassetts Ice Cream became the very first merchant to sign a lease at the newly opened Reading Terminal Market, a location it has called home ever since. This deep-rooted history is visible even today, with the original marble counter still standing, a silent witness to over a century of happy customers. The business has remained family-owned and operated for six generations, a remarkable achievement that speaks volumes about their dedication to their craft and community.
In an era of fleeting trends, Bassetts has managed to strike a perfect balance between honoring its heritage and evolving with the times. The recipes have been passed down through the family, ensuring that the signature rich and creamy texture, a hallmark of their "Philadelphia-style" ice cream, remains unchanged. This style, which omits the use of egg yolks, places the focus squarely on the fresh, high-quality cream, resulting in a clean and luxuriously silky mouthfeel. What's more, the company proudly sources its dairy from a co-op of dairy farmers in western Pennsylvania. This commitment to using local, PA Preferred ingredients not only supports the regional agricultural community but also guarantees a level of freshness and quality that is difficult to replicate. This focus on local sourcing is just one of the many reasons why Bassetts Ice Cream is a point of pride for Pennsylvanians.
The brand's reputation for excellence has expanded far beyond the Reading Terminal Market. While their flagship store remains the heart of the operation, Bassetts ice cream is now sold in independent dipping parlors, restaurants, country clubs, and retirement communities throughout the region. The company has even ventured into international markets, shipping their beloved product to countries in Asia. Despite this global reach, the heart and soul of Bassetts remain firmly in Philadelphia. The company continues to innovate, introducing new flavors and packaging while never losing sight of the traditions that made it a household name. This blend of history, quality, and forward-thinking makes Bassetts Ice Cream an essential stop for anyone exploring the culinary landscape of Pennsylvania.
For those planning a visit, it's worth noting the unique charm of the location itself. The Reading Terminal Market is a vibrant and bustling hub of activity, a feast for the senses that offers a diverse array of food and goods. Bassetts Ice Cream’s presence within this historic space adds to the overall experience. Customers can enjoy their scoop while taking in the lively atmosphere, admiring the hand-painted mural surrounding the mezzanine, or even watching historical video footage of the ice cream being produced in the market's basement. The service is known to be quick and efficient, even during busy times, with courteous and friendly staff and modern conveniences like self-service kiosks to place orders.
In conclusion, Bassetts Ice Cream is more than just a shop; it's a Philadelphia institution. For locals, it represents a connection to the city's past and a taste of home. For new visitors, it's an opportunity to experience America's oldest ice cream brand, handcrafted with care and a commitment to quality that has lasted for over 160 years. The blend of rich history, locally sourced ingredients, and a diverse range of delicious flavors makes it an unmissable destination. Whether you're a long-time fan or a first-timer, a visit to Bassetts in the Reading Terminal Market is a delightful experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I bought the banana and vanilla ice cream with peanuts topping in a cup from the Bassetts Ice Cream location in the Reading Terminal Market in Philly. Ice cream is tasty and fresh. Lots of people order from this store. Service is very quick and the staffs are courteous and friendly. They also have a kiosk to place the order.
July 16 · Chris SamOne of place recommended to go while I am at the Reading Terminal Market. I asked one of employee for a recommendation and he told me Salted Carmel Pretzel and either Banana or Cherry. I got Salted Carmel Pretzel and Banana. Although Banana was good to greatish, if I was to go back, I would only get Salted Carmel Pretzel for sure! If you love ice cream, must try this place when you are at Reading Terminal Market!
July 13 · MinoriBassets Ice CreamReading Terminal5/12Kind customer service - they allowed us to taste things and patiently waited close to closing time. We had the vanilla bean and blueberry pomegranate flavors and both were very creamy and flavorful. They give a LOT of ice cream — I recommend sharing with someone if possible.
June 01 · Maria KhanJust okay ! Disappointed by the mango sorbet that tasted like orangeThe gentleman at the cashier was very nice though and huge portions !
July 19 · Yasmine AtoukHad peanut butter swirl and chocolate chocolate chip. It was very good, but I do think Milk Jawn is better. Not sure this is truly worth the long line but is a good sweet treat!
