Located at 4504 IN-327, Garrett, IN 46738, Blue Moon is far more than just an ice cream shop; it's a cherished local institution, a beacon of sweet and savory delights that has been serving the community since 1952. While it's certainly a go-to for frozen treats, Blue Moon has also earned a dedicated following for its unique hot food offerings, creating a diverse menu that appeals to a wide range of tastes.
Blue Moon's enduring popularity speaks volumes about its place in the heart of Indiana. It's a place where childhood memories are made, where families gather for an evening treat, and where the simple pleasure of a classic coney dog or a refreshing shake is savored. The anticipation surrounding its seasonal opening each year is a testament to its deep roots in the community and the consistent quality it delivers. While every establishment has its quirks and areas for improvement, Blue Moon's long-standing presence highlights its overall appeal and its success in becoming a beloved part of Garrett's local landscape.
This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and informative overview of Blue Moon, helping users in the Indiana region learn more about what makes this Garrett establishment a suitable and enjoyable stop. We'll delve into its location and accessibility, the variety of services offered, its distinctive features and highlights, and essential contact information, all to help you plan your visit to this unique local spot.
---Blue Moon is strategically located at 4504 IN-327, Garrett, IN 46738, USA. Its position on State Road 327 places it prominently within Garrett, making it a recognizable and accessible destination for both local residents and those traveling through northeast Indiana. Being on a state road enhances its visibility and ease of access for customers from Auburn, Fort Wayne, and other nearby towns in the region.
However, it's important for visitors to be aware of the specific layout of the shop, particularly its drive-through setup. As noted by customer feedback, the shop is situated on a corner of a "super busy 4 way intersection," which can sometimes make pulling in a bit confusing, especially for first-time visitors. There appear to be multiple lanes for ordering, accommodating a potentially long line of cars. While this dual-lane system helps manage the often-high demand, new patrons should approach with a bit of caution to ensure they enter the correct ordering lane. Despite these navigational nuances, the consistent long lines of cars indicate that customers are willing to navigate the intersection for the beloved treats offered within.
It is also important to note that Blue Moon primarily operates as a drive-through or walk-up window service, with "no outside seating for this shop." This means that customers typically enjoy their treats in their vehicles or take them to a nearby park or home. Understanding this setup beforehand can help manage expectations for visitors planning their trip to this Garrett staple. The convenience of a drive-through, even with its unique entry points, makes it an ideal spot for a quick and satisfying stop on the go for Indiana locals.
---Blue Moon offers a diverse menu that extends beyond typical ice cream parlor fare, combining classic frozen treats with beloved savory options. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect:
Ice Cream: Blue Moon is, first and foremost, an ice cream shop. They offer classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate, and twist, as well as a "flavor of the week" to keep the options exciting. Portions are available in pints and quarts for take-home enjoyment.
Milkshakes: A popular choice, their shakes are known for being "super thick." While one review mentioned minimal flavor, the thickness is often a highlight for shake lovers, suggesting a rich, creamy base that can be customized with various flavorings.
Coney Dogs: A highly recommended savory item, the coney dog is a local favorite. These classic hot dogs are served with their "famous chili sauce." While one review noted a light amount of sauce, the option to add toppings like onion is available.
Fried Cauliflower: This appears to be a signature item, even prompting drives from out of town. Despite mixed reviews regarding its consistency (some found it "burnt on half of the outside, yet somehow soggy/greasy on the inside"), another customer declared it "incredible" and a "must-have." Its unique presence on the menu makes it a distinctive offering.
Other Savory Items: The menu also includes a range of other hot food items, such as hamburgers, cheeseburgers, crispy chicken, BBQ pork, fish sandwiches, grilled cheese, hot dogs, corn dogs, tenderloin, and an "Eclipse Burger" special. They also offer various baskets with fries and dipping sauces.
Fries & Such: A selection of sides like French fries (shoestring and curly), onion rings, cheese sticks, fried mushrooms, zucchini, buffalo chips, and chili cheese fries are available to complement savory orders.
Specialty Desserts: Beyond scoops and shakes, Blue Moon offers unique dessert creations like the "Upside Down Banana Split" and a "Tin Roof" sundae, providing more elaborate options for sweet indulgence.
Pup Cups: For furry friends, Blue Moon even offers a "Pup Cup" – vanilla ice cream with a mini dog treat, showcasing their friendly and inclusive approach to all family members.
The combination of traditional ice cream treats and a robust savory menu makes Blue Moon a versatile destination for a quick meal or a satisfying dessert in Garrett, Indiana.

Long-Standing Local Favorite: Operating since 1952, Blue Moon has deep roots in the community. This longevity signifies a consistent quality and beloved status that transcends fleeting trends, making it a familiar and trusted spot for generations of Indiana residents.
Diverse Menu Beyond Ice Cream: Unlike many pure ice cream shops, Blue Moon offers a substantial savory menu. This includes "local favorite" coney dogs and the often-discussed "fried cauliflower," making it a versatile stop for a full meal or a snack before dessert. This dual offering broadens its appeal significantly.
Famous Fried Cauliflower: Despite mixed individual experiences, the fried cauliflower generates significant buzz and is a reason some customers specifically seek out Blue Moon, indicating its status as a unique and memorable menu item.
Fantastic Pricing: Customers consistently praise the "fantastic pricing," feeling that they get great value for their money. This affordability is a major draw, especially for families and those looking for an enjoyable treat without overspending.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Took a drive to try this spot out on a whim (I heard great things about the breaded cauliflower) but the disappointment was real. First issue is the drive through set up. The shop is on a corner of a super busy 4 way intersection with no real idea of where to pull in. (I made the mistake of trying to enter on the north side) after a short wait we were able to pull up to make our order. The pricing was fantastic. As we were pulling out we noticed a line of about 10 cars so apparently they take orders on both sides. There is no outside seating for this shop! Now to the food.. the cauliflower was burnt on half of the outside, yet somehow soggy/greasy on the inside. We got two orders, wasn’t able to even finish one. The coney dog had hardly enough sauce to taste. The added onion was enough though. The shakes were super thick but minimal flavor. They tasted more like vanilla with a dash of flavoring. It was opening day, but we won’t be going back anytime soon.
March 14 · Rheanna RayI love this place! The fried cauliflower is incredible. I have to have all the flavors before they close for the season. The kids who work here are great. I do have a suggestion or two. Try out fried okra that might be a winner and tutti fruiti ice cream. That might be a winner too.
July 13 · A BetzCharged me 75 cents for a water and forgot to give me the water. When I realized I didn’t have the water I immediately called and they refused to give me my money back instead offering me a credit for my next purchase. I don’t live in Auburn. Very poor customer service and they don’t even have their phone number printed in the reciept. 👎
May 25 · Jeffrey FoxAlways an amazing experience. Took the grandkids this weekend and they loved their burgers and sundaes. The workers are all very young but they do an excellent job. Fast, friendly, and super efficient even with long lines. Take your food to the nearby park! Worth the 20 minute drive from Fort Wayne any day.
April 06 · Sheryl RaeThe goods: the staff was very enthusiastic and appear to enjoy their job. The food came out pretty quickly while the place was pretty busy. Sadly that's about it.The bad: I guess we should start with the ice cream. I don't know if their machine was broken but it was not very creamy soft serve. It reminded of the old churned ice cream that you got with the powder mix from the grocery store (iykyk). As a person who has made ice cream at home it is clear that they have too much water in their mix causing ice crystals to form. The tenderloin sandwich is a pork fritter that identifies as tenderloin sandwich, perfectly edible but not an Indiana pork tenderloin sandwich. The hamburgers were obviously frozen patties and lack the proportions of meat and fat to remain juicy. The fries were greasy and competing with in and out burger for least appetizing fries.I honestly have no idea how there is a line going both directions. If you want cool treats and fast food eats just go dq and skip this place all together.
