Dalzell Dairy Introduce
Dalzell Dairy is a local ice cream stand in Suttons Bay, Michigan, with a history that pays tribute to a long-standing family legacy in the area. The name "Dalzell" is a nod to a three-generation family business that served the community as milkmen from 1918 to 1993. This local ice cream shop, owned by Haley Fox (née Dalzell) and her husband Jake, is a heartfelt tribute to that 75-year business. It stands as a testament to the family's enduring connection to the Leelanau Peninsula and their commitment to serving the community. Unlike a large corporate chain, Dalzell Dairy offers a personalized, community-focused experience that is deeply rooted in the history of the region. The business model is centered on providing high-quality, local products in a friendly atmosphere, making it a favorite destination for both residents and visitors exploring the beautiful Leelanau County.
The shop's menu is designed to cater to a variety of tastes, offering a blend of traditional and unique frozen treats. One of the highlights of Dalzell Dairy is its commitment to sourcing local products. They serve a variety of ice cream flavors from two well-known Michigan dairies: Moomers in Traverse City and Guernsey Farms Dairy in Northville. This partnership with established local brands ensures that the ice cream is of the highest quality and resonates with a regional sense of pride. In addition to hard-scoop ice cream, they also offer classic soft-serve, which is a perfect option for those who prefer a smoother, creamier texture. The menu also includes a popular vegan option, Dole Whip, which has a dedicated following for its refreshing, dairy-free flavor.
Dalzell Dairy is located at 403 N St Joseph St in the charming village of Suttons Bay. Suttons Bay is a small but vibrant community with a population of just over 600 people, nestled on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. The village is known for its beautiful scenery, unique shops, and friendly atmosphere, making it a popular destination for tourists and a tight-knit community for residents. The shop's location on St Joseph St places it in the heart of the village, making it easily accessible for anyone strolling through the downtown area. It is a perfect stop for a treat after a day of shopping, exploring local art galleries, or enjoying the beach. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the shop is a great reward after biking a portion of the TART trail, which connects Traverse City to Suttons Bay, as noted by a recent customer.
The accessibility of Dalzell Dairy is a major draw for both locals and visitors. The shop is easily reachable by car, with parking available nearby, and is also conveniently located for those who are walking or biking through the village. The seasonal nature of the business, which is typical for many shops in Northern Michigan, adds to its charm and makes it a much-anticipated opening each year. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had the Vanilla Malt Shake and my wife had a Flurry with Butterfinger and Heath Bar---both were excellent! Dalzell Dairy is a very nice treat after biking from Traverse City to Suttons Bay. The place was busy but the staff was courteous and quick.
July 20 · Grover EasterlingVery good value ice cream stand. They have it all, customer service is great. Love the Dole Whip options and love the reasonably sized kiddie option so the kids are not too wound up! Didn't get anything too fancy so not sure on the quality of the more labor intensive items, but didn't give any reason to expect they aren't great too.
June 16 · Sandy AlexanderWent here for a hot afternoon ice cream treat. My Cherry milkshake was fabulous. (Use one of those bigger diameter straws to get all the cherry goodness.) My wife had a "peanut butter cup" Flurry which, unfortunately, every scoop of ice cream had 4-5 mini-peanut butter cups which were frozen and quite hard so it was hard to enjoy the frozen confection. She did enjoy the ice cream. Also, for the value and amount = very good, well worth the money. We'd both still recommend this ice cream stop. :)
June 30 · Peter WelmerinkThe women who originally ran the ice cream shop were phenomenal -- hardworking, community-minded, and truly built something special from the ground up. Unfortunately, local word is that after their success, the landlord raised the rent and handed the space over to relatives, who now operate the ice cream shop. Many loyal locals and longtime visitors, no longer support the business because of how that transition was handled. If you're looking for great ice cream AND want to support ethical, locally owned businesses, there are other nearby options that deserve your visit more.
July 06 · LanFrom the moment I stepped onto the property at Dalzell Dairy, I felt the warmth of a deeply rooted family tradition serving up big scoops of nostalgia alongside a modern ice cream experience. The shop features craft scoops sourced locally from Moomers and Guernsey Farms, plus a rotating menu of soft‑serve options (including vegan and dairy‑free), fun Dole whip flavors, milkshakes, malts, and more.🍦 Rich Heritage & Family Feel—Dalzell Dairy isn’t just any ice cream spot—it’s a revival of a local legend. The Dalzell family served northern Michigan for 75 years via milk delivery, and now great‑granddaughter Haley Fox and her husband Jake, are honoring that legacy with a heartfelt tribute in Suttons Bay, MI. The shop is filled with old photos, dairy artifacts, and friendly smiles—just what a hometown gem should be!
