Dari-Dip Introduce
For residents of Portage and the wider Northwest Indiana region, the arrival of warm weather is often synonymous with a trip to a local ice cream shop. Among the beloved spots is Dari-Dip, a long-standing establishment that has been serving up classic frozen treats for years. This local gem isn't just another place to grab a cone; it's a part of the community, offering a nostalgic experience and a menu full of satisfying options. Known for its generous portions and reasonable prices, Dari-Dip has earned a loyal following who appreciate its straightforward, no-frills approach to delivering delicious desserts.
Dari-Dip stands out in the local dessert scene by focusing on what it does best: providing good ice cream at a great value. It’s a place where you can find classic soft-serve, along with some more interesting and unique flavors, ensuring there's something for everyone. While the menu does include some food items, the real draw for most locals is the ice cream, which is consistently praised for its quality and portion sizes. The friendly, casual atmosphere makes it an easy choice for a quick treat after a long day or a destination for a fun family outing.
The sentiment from locals is clear: Dari-Dip is a dependable spot for a satisfying dessert. It’s a place where the value is high and the ice cream is good. The shop’s dedication to providing generous servings for a fair price makes it a standout option compared to other places in the area. This focus on customer value is a key reason why it continues to be a favorite among the Portage community.
---Dari-Dip is conveniently located at 5469 Central Ave, Portage, IN 46368, USA. This location places it in a central part of Portage, making it easily accessible for a wide range of residents. The shop’s presence on a main thoroughfare means it is simple to find and get to, whether you're coming from a nearby neighborhood or traveling from another part of the city.
The shop offers a drive-thru option, which is a significant convenience for customers on the go. This feature allows for a quick and easy way to get your treats without having to leave your car, a benefit that is particularly appreciated by parents with young children or those with a tight schedule. However, it is worth noting a point of feedback from a real customer regarding the drive-thru exit. A review mentioned that the drive-thru exit is "awful" and makes it "almost impossible to not hit the curb and scratch your rims if you're in an SUV or a truck." While this is a consideration for some customers, especially those with larger vehicles, the overall accessibility and convenience of the location and its drive-thru service are still seen as major positives for most people. For those concerned, the option to park and walk up is always available.
---While primarily known for its ice cream, Dari-Dip offers a variety of treats and a limited selection of food items. The menu is focused on classic, crowd-pleasing options. Here's a closer look at what you can find:
Soft-Serve Ice Cream: The core of the menu is the delicious soft-serve. Dari-Dip is known for its generous proportions, giving you more for your money compared to some competitors. They also offer "interesting flavors" beyond the usual vanilla and chocolate, which keeps the menu fresh and exciting for regulars. A standout feature is the availability of "a couple of low sugar flavors," catering to customers who are watching their sugar intake but still want to enjoy a treat.
Sundaes and Cones: Customers can get their soft-serve in classic cones or as sundaes with a variety of toppings. The focus here is on delivering a satisfying, sizable dessert that is both delicious and affordable.
Food Items: In addition to ice cream, Dari-Dip offers a limited food menu. However, based on customer reviews, the food items may not be the main attraction. For example, one review noted that the food is "sort of ho-hum," and another specifically mentioned the nachos were a "huge disappointment," consisting of a "bag of chips and a bit of nacho cheese." While the food might not be the highlight, it's still an option for those looking for a quick bite before their dessert.
Dari-Dip has several key features that make it a local favorite and a go-to spot for ice cream in Portage.
Generous Portions and Good Prices: This is one of the most significant highlights. As one customer noted, "Their proportions are larger for the price when compared to Dairy Queen." This focus on value is a major draw for families and individuals alike, making it an economical choice for a treat.
Variety of Flavors: The shop offers a range of flavors, including some that are more unique, which keeps customers coming back to try something new. The inclusion of low-sugar options also shows a commitment to catering to different dietary needs, which is a thoughtful touch.
Soft-Serve Quality: The soft-serve itself is well-regarded by customers. One review stated that the "soft serve... was pretty good," indicating that the core product is solid and satisfying. This foundational quality is what makes the shop a reliable choice for a dessert.
Drive-Thru Convenience: Despite the noted issue with the exit, the presence of a drive-thru is a major convenience. For many people, the ability to get a treat without having to get out of the car is a big plus, especially during bad weather or when they are in a hurry.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Pretty good treats. They have some interesting flavors. Their proportions are larger for the price when compared to Dairy Queen. The drive through exit is awful though. It's almost impossible to not hit the curb and scratch your rims if you're in an SUV or a truck. If they could knock down that curb (which is totally unnecessary anyways), this would get five stars.
June 21 · rtfgujihy uyhjigtfbr (forced google name)Great prices, good ice cream, but sort of ho-hum food.We had the soft serve, which was pretty good and they offer a couple of low sugar flavors. The nachos are a huge disappointment. They give you a bag of chips and a bit of nacho cheese and let you go at it.
August 02 · Greg EakinsUpside down bananas split is legendary. Busy day with families and groups hanging out and yet I edited no more than 7/8 minutes for our order. Those kids are killing it in there!I brought my fiance here Monday afternoon. She's lived in Indiana (Native of Chicago/Southside/Bridgeport) for nearly a decade and never heard of this little gem. So, i insisted we stop by and although it was a good hour out of our way, the look in her face when she was presented with the UBS.... absolutely worth it! Dari Dip gas never disappointed ...
June 05 · James CannonWe came in on Saturday night, a girl with black hair and glasses took our order. She never handed us our receipt and then we got halfway home, reminder we live 30+ minutes away from the spot. My boyfriend got a hurricane banana split with NO BANANAS, so I called them and told them; she stated and asked for my name to be written down to get a remake. So 2 days later we drove 30+ minutes to get our remake, and the assistant manager basically just straight said to our faces that nothing was written down & she couldn't help us. Never going here again.
March 24 · Selena CaniffI went there Thursday night and the treats are still great but they are not worth the money. The quantity is about 1/2 of what they used to be. I was very disappointed in the cost of 3 brownie parfait. It was in a sundae dish not like the taller dairy queen style one's used in the past.
