---FRÍO Gelato specializes in providing a delicious and authentic taste of Argentina through a variety of unique frozen desserts. Their main offerings are handcrafted gelato and sorbets, but they also have other delicious options.
Artisanal Gelato: The heart of FRÍO Gelato's menu is its rich and creamy Argentine-style gelato. Unlike American ice cream, Argentine gelato is known for being softer and denser, with an intense flavor. Flavors range from traditional favorites to unique Argentine specialties, like Dulce de Leche (milk caramel), Mascarpone con Frambuesa (Mascarpone cheese with raspberry), and Tramontana (vanilla with streaks of chocolate and milk caramel).
Sorbets: For those seeking a non-dairy or lighter option, FRÍO Gelato offers a selection of refreshing sorbets. These are made with real fruit and are naturally gluten-free and non-dairy, making them a great choice for those with dietary restrictions. Popular sorbet flavors include Frutos Del Bosque (mixed berries) and Limón (lemon).
Gluten-Free and Nut-Free Options: A significant point of pride for FRÍO Gelato is their commitment to allergy-friendly production. All of their gelato and sorbets are prepared in a dedicated gluten-free and nut-free kitchen, which provides peace of mind for customers with celiac disease or nut allergies. Reviewers often praise the staff's attentiveness to allergy concerns, highlighting their commitment to safety and inclusivity.
Waffle Cones and Cups: You can enjoy your gelato in a traditional cup or a freshly made waffle cone. The cones are a great way to elevate the experience, offering a satisfying crunch to complement the smooth texture of the gelato. While some customers have noted a policy on the number of samples, the staff is generally known for being helpful and offering recommendations to guide you toward the perfect flavor.
Coffee and Gelato Combinations: Some locations offer coffee and gelato combinations, such as the Café-lato. This treat combines high-quality coffee with gelato, creating a delightful and energizing dessert. A customer review specifically mentioned the "Café-lato (coconut)" as an amazing option, praising both the coffee and the gelato components.
The variety of offerings ensures that there's something for everyone, whether you're a fan of rich, creamy flavors or prefer something light and fruity.
---FRÍO Gelato at Navy Pier is known for several key features that make it a standout destination for dessert lovers.
Authentic Argentine Tradition: The primary highlight of FRÍO Gelato is its dedication to the traditional Argentine gelato-making process. Over a century ago, Italian immigrants brought their gelato techniques to Argentina, where local artisans blended them with regional ingredients. You can taste the difference in the flavors, many of which are directly inspired by Argentine culture, like Dulce de Leche and Sambayón (egg custard with Marsala wine).
Commitment to Natural and Fresh Ingredients: FRÍO Gelato prides itself on using only all-natural ingredients and real fruits. This approach results in vibrant, clean, and well-balanced flavors that stand out. For example, the mango sorbet has been described as "very fresh, clean, sweet and well-balanced fruit flavor." This commitment to quality ingredients ensures a delicious and wholesome treat.
Allergy-Friendly Kitchen: A major highlight, and a key selling point for many, is the fact that FRÍO Gelato's products are made in a dedicated gluten-free and nut-free kitchen. This is a crucial feature for individuals with serious allergies, as it provides a safe environment to enjoy a sweet treat without worry. Many customers appreciate the staff's attention to detail regarding allergy safety, further enhancing the trust and quality of the experience.
Stunning Location and Views: Situated at Navy Pier, the shop offers more than just dessert—it provides an experience. You can enjoy your gelato while taking in the breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline. The vibrant atmosphere of the Pier, with its rides, attractions, and beautiful scenery, complements the delicious gelato perfectly, turning a simple stop into a memorable moment.
Unique Flavors: While they offer classic flavors, FRÍO Gelato is celebrated for its more inventive and distinctly Argentine options. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1“Just so you know, one person can only try two flavors,” said the person behind the counter without making eye contact with me. I regretted being flustered as I tried to explain that I only tried one sample and it’s my son’s second samples. I felt so annoyed because the person before us was treated so well. The comment made me overthink what was so different about me and the other customer, who was also a parent of two. Gelato is great. We tried mascarpone and berry sorbet. Service can use more kindness. Or perhaps you can put the sign “two samples only” to avoid saying it to customers.
July 06 · Indah SetiawatiHad a Café-lato (coconut) amazing!!! Great coffee and gelato!!!
March 17 · Rafael Ochotecopicked gelato for a good birthday treat, and we were so glad we did!! frío was delicious :) the cups looked small but do NOT be fooled—they STUFF those cups full!! couldn't be happier with the quality!! got a cup of coffee+chocolate and a cup of horchata!! so yummy and soooo filling!! def will be back, thanks so much :)
May 11 · Makayla BushWas not the best service. I accidentally ordered the wrong flavor for my 6 year old after mishearing him and when they handed it to him and he cried about it being wrong they wouldn’t remake it for him. Admittedly was my mistake and I just had to get back in line and pay for another one. But I was kind of hoping they’d be more understanding. Oh well. Won’t be back.
July 01 · Jenny JinWe were in Navy Pier on a jampacked Saturday during Spring Break. This was a great place to snag a treat. I tried the Marscapone and raspberry gelato and my friend got the same flavor as an affogato. We both thought it was delicious and found a nearby bench to eat.
