It’s a local institution, a place where the name itself, Grandpa's Homemade Ice Cream, tells you everything you need to know about the passion and care that goes into every single serving. This shop is more than just a place to get a dessert; it’s a destination for families, friends, and anyone with a sweet tooth looking for a taste of authentic, handcrafted goodness. As one customer aptly put it, the atmosphere is "amazing," and the treats are a perfect way to end any day of the week. This article will provide a comprehensive look into what makes this shop so special, from its delectable menu to its convenient location and the heartfelt history behind its name.
The story of Grandpa's Homemade Ice Cream is one that resonates deeply with the local community. It was founded by a local legend, Bob Cook, who, in the final years of his life, decided to turn a lifelong family tradition of making homemade ice cream into a business. The recipes, some of which are not even written down, are a testament to his dedication to quality and his love for the craft. The shop's name was a loving tribute from his nine grandchildren, solidifying its identity as a family-centered business. After Bob's passing, the legacy has been lovingly continued by his son, Jason Cook, who, along with other family members, ensures that the same rich, delicious taste and commitment to the community continue. This history gives every scoop a sense of tradition and love that is hard to find anywhere else.
---Grandpa's Homemade Ice Cream is located at 600 S Roosevelt Ave, Burlington, IA 52601, USA. Its position on South Roosevelt Avenue makes it a highly visible and easily accessible spot for residents and visitors alike. For those heading home from a day of work or looking for a treat after visiting a local attraction, the shop's location is ideal. One visitor noted that after visiting Catfish Bend Casino, they found the shop to be a great spot for "some sweets," highlighting its convenience for those enjoying the area. The shop also offers "ample" parking, which is a significant plus, especially during busy hours.
An important point for visitors to note is the shop's service model. While it has a spacious interior that some customers wish they could experience for the "nostalgia," it has been serving by drive-thru only at various times. This has been a popular and efficient way to serve customers, making it a quick and convenient stop for a sweet treat without even having to leave your car. The drive-thru service, combined with the ample parking, ensures that getting your favorite ice cream is a seamless process. The location on a main street and the easy access it provides solidify its status as a go-to spot for locals in and around Burlington.
---True to its name, Grandpa's Homemade Ice Cream focuses exclusively on what it does best: ice cream and related treats. While some ice cream shacks in the area might offer a broader menu of hot dogs and fries, this shop keeps its menu pure, ensuring that every item is of the highest quality.

- Community Legacy: The business is a legacy of its original founder, Bob Cook, and continues to be run by his family. This deep connection to the community and its history adds a layer of warmth and authenticity that modern chain stores can’t replicate.
- Convenient Drive-Thru Service: The drive-thru only model, as observed by a customer, provides a quick and convenient way to get a delicious treat, which is perfect for families or individuals on the go.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I ordered the brownie sundae, which was amazing!! Great atmosphere, and the owner was exceptional. They are serving by drive thru only and wish I could have gone inside to experience the nostalgia. Perfect for every day of the week!!
October 16 · Lorie KnightReview Date: July 11th, 2016Don’t grandparents make the best food. While visiting Catfish Bend Casino, I figured I would see if there were any Ice Cream Shacks in the area. Luckily, I found one! So after the casino, I hit up Grandpa’s to get some sweets.Parking here is pretty ample, so that’s a huge plus. Inside is pretty spacious and they have a lot of flavors to choose from. Unlike a lot of Ice Cream Shacks, they only served ice cream and ice cream related things. No hot dogs, tenderloins, french fries here.I don’t remember what I ordered from here, but I do remember it was pretty good. It scratched my itch but nothing beyond that. What really turned me off about this place was the worker behind the counter. His hygiene left a lot to be desired, which is reflected in my personal rating. I don’t remember what he did, but it set off a red flag or two in my head as I watched him.But besides the one worker, it was a nice little place. I figured Burlington would offer a lot but this seemed to be the only ice cream shack that I could find on Yelp/Google.
March 31 · Joshua DailyGood stop. Homemade ice cream. It's now just drive-thru only. I had a yummy turtle pie sundae.
July 09 · Tracie NeustelOutstanding ice cream!! Spent quite a bit of time talking with the owner. He only makes his ice cream with all natural ingredients, including some very expensive vanilla. If you're in Burlington, Iowa, it's a must stop.
February 23 · David BinckleyToday was a beautiful 70 degree day so my Brother and I obviously had to go get some ice cream. but No be did not go to Coldstone Creamery, or DQ, we went to Grandpas, for one simple reason.HOMEMADE!!This is a locally owned icecream shop, so no they don't have a fancy sign, no they don't have fancy cups, but I didn't come here for, fancy. I came to Grandpas to try their homemade icecream whose recipes have been passed down from generation to generation.I had the medium cone with one scoop of Dark Chocolate and one scoop Salted Caramel, and it was Delicious!! The chocolate was rich and the caramel was so smooth and creamy. You can taste the love! They also have a big selection of flavors that very from day to day and may sellout if you don't get there quick enough. You can buy a pint to take home with you, or even a brownie or cookie that they use to make their sundaes. Duh they have sundaes!! And I have to come back and try them!So should you!
