Jersey Junction Introduce
For generations of locals in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jersey Junction is far more than just an ice cream shop; it’s a cherished institution and a trip back in time. Located in the heart of Gaslight Village, this beloved establishment has been serving up sweet treats and fond memories since it first opened its doors in 1963. The moment you step inside, you are transported to a simpler time, surrounded by the charm of an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. The shop's legacy is deeply intertwined with the community, and for many families, a visit to Jersey Junction is a tradition, a ritual that marks the beginning of summer and creates lasting memories. From the historical photos on the walls to the vintage school desks for seating, every detail is carefully curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia and warmth.
Jersey Junction's story is particularly rich and unique, thanks in part to its founder, Doris “Chris” Van Allsburg, the mother of the renowned author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg, creator of "The Polar Express" and "Jumanji." This connection adds a magical layer to the shop, with a model train inspired by the famous "Polar Express" running along the ceiling, delighting kids and adults alike. A customer review beautifully captures this sentiment, saying, "This train is sorta like the first Polar Express!" The shop’s name itself has a story, with "Jersey" referring to the belief that Jersey cows produce the best milk, and thus the best ice cream, and "Junction" signifying a place where people come together. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, with a staff that is consistently praised for being "professional and courteous." One reviewer noted how the staff even "offered our group a 'pup cup' for the dog on the very hot day," a testament to the friendly and accommodating service that has made Jersey Junction a community staple for over six decades.
Located at 652 Croswell Ave SE, East Grand Rapids, MI 49506, USA, Jersey Junction is ideally situated for easy access. The shop is located within the historic Gaslight Village shopping district, a popular and bustling area that is a destination in itself. This central location makes it a convenient stop for locals and visitors alike. The surrounding area offers plenty to do, from a visit to John Collins Park on Reeds Lake to a stroll through the charming shops. Jersey Junction's spot is also a popular stop for cyclists, as evidenced by the full bike racks often seen outside. For those with mobility challenges, it's important to note the historical nature of the building. As one detailed review pointed out, the restroom is small and may not be easily accessible for wheelchairs or walkers. However, the review also helpfully directs patrons to a wheelchair-accessible restroom at a nearby Starbucks or D&W store, demonstrating the community's helpful spirit. The outdoor deck provides additional seating, offering a great spot to enjoy a treat, although it is worth noting that umbrellas for shade may not always be available.
The menu at Jersey Junction is a delightful blend of classic ice cream parlor favorites and nostalgic treats.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This place was pretty spectacular. We went on a memory journey through Grand Rapids and hit Jersey Junction to have some ice cream. It was great to see all the psychic candies and the service with fantastic.
July 14 · Anthony J D'AngeloJersey Junction is a fun tradition for our family! Great place. Chris VanAllsburg started this lovely nostalgic ice cream and candy shop. Kids of all ages enjoy the model train that travels above eye level around the small shop. Sit in the vintage school desks while you wait, or take in the historical photos and newspaper clippings adorning the walls. So much history about Ramona Park, the Park that used to be on Reeds Lake where John Collin’s Park is now. (This is a vote to bring back Ramona Park!) There is also a deck with seating and a bench just below under a tree. The bike rack is often full of kid and adult bikes!Have you read or seen The Polar Express? Chris VanAllsburg’s son, also named Chris, created the story and the book and movie both have references to Grand Rapids. This train is sorta like the first Polar Express! There is a seating area & tiny restroom up one step, next to the staff waffle-making goodness.m. Unfortunately, the restrooms paper towels are not accessible for those with some disabilities (or shorter patrons). Because of the historically small size of the shop, the restroom itself is also small, unable to accommodate wheelchairs or walkers well. **The Starbucks a few shops down has a wheelchair accessible one in the back parking lot, or the D&W across the street.**All in all, it’s a darling ice cream shop with old charm and the young staff were professional and courteous. They even offered our group a “pup cup” for the dog on the very hot day.Umbrellas weren’t out and would be helpful in 100* heat, however! Thanks for all these years of fun, Jersey! We get excited for April 1st when you open for the season!
July 06 · Kyla JoyMASSIVELY amazing ice cream servings. The service and atmosphere were all around wonderful.- Dish: Waffle Cone with Michigan Pot Hole Ice Cream. Simply delicious. Similar to moose tracks, but with a chocolate Michigan twist. Love it! Probably my new favorite. The waffle cone was on the softer side, a great texture, and a bit on the sweeter side (but not too much at all). The price is a tad higher, but for the amount you get is WELL worth it!On a second visit, I also got the Peanut Butter Cup (has peanut butter flavor ice cream). It was good, but missing that rich peanut butter flavor. You can definitely taste the unique quality homemade ice cream nuance.- Service: We asked questions and were answered politely, VERY positively, and informatively. The staff there seem to have a great handle on things! We were helped rather quickly and there was virtually no wait.- Atmosphere: Very historic and old fashion. The memorabilia is fascinating and you could spend hours just looking at it all. They had a toy train running a circuit around the ceiling that was so fun to watch with the kids! The bathroom needed an update, though. Tiny, but functional.- Conclusion: This is an awesome place to take anyone special, but especially kids, for a birthday or other celebration.Stopped by on a Saturday around 5pm in September 2024 and June 2025.
June 24 · Aaron LehrmanOne of my absolute fav ice cream shoppes! They have a TON of options! I like how they offer cute, fun drink/treat options as well! I want to come back to try this sprite float they were promoting soon!I got a double scoop in a waffle cone… and OMG YALL!!! 😂😭🫣 TELL ME WHY this was dang near a PINT of ice cream!! 😅 Not complaining! Lol Was pleasantly was surprised!I got the chocolate (ofc), and a heaping scoop of Carolina peach. OMG the peach was UNREAL. Perfect amount of peach, with little frozen peach chunks that were perfection!I highly suggest…. But if you do want any advice, ask for a cup or two when you order a dbl scoop in a waffle cone! You’ll thank me later! 🍦
June 28 · Gabby JI love this place so much and I have been going here since I was a little kid and would always get the amazing chocolate monster. One down side is that it is very expensive compared to other ice cream shops but I know that they need to pay their kind employees and pay for the ice cream so I understand. I would give it 100000000/10 stars if I could. Amazing place
