John's Water Ice Introduce
For generations of Pennsylvanians, especially those in the Philadelphia area, the arrival of warmer weather means one thing: it's time for a water ice. While there are many places to get this quintessential Philly treat, few hold the same iconic status and history as John's Water Ice. Since 1945, this family-owned shop has been a cornerstone of the South Philadelphia community, serving up a simple yet sublime frozen dessert that has earned a loyal following. John's is not just a place to get a snack; it's a local institution, a place where generations have made memories while standing in line on a hot summer day. This article explores what makes John's Water Ice a cherished destination for both longtime residents and newcomers alike.
The story of John's Water Ice begins with its founder, John Cardullo, an immigrant who started his business by delivering coal and heating oil in the winter and ice in the summer. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to create a product that would become a city-wide favorite: authentic Italian water ice made from a secret family recipe. Today, his grandson, Anthony Cardullo, continues this legacy, using the same dedication to quality and tradition. The commitment to using only the purest ingredients—fruit, sugar, and frozen water—is what sets their water ice apart. This dedication to tradition, combined with a friendly neighborhood atmosphere, is what has kept people coming back year after year.
John's is often lauded for its pure flavors and perfect texture. The water ice is smooth and creamy without being overly sweet, allowing the natural fruit flavors to shine. This isn't just an opinion; many customers rave about the authenticity of the taste, noting that it's a refreshing and light treat that doesn't leave you feeling weighed down. Whether you're a lifelong Philadelphian or new to the area, a visit to John's is an essential part of the local experience, offering a true taste of summer and a connection to a rich local history.

John's Water Ice offers a focused menu of classic frozen treats, perfected over decades. Their commitment to quality over quantity is evident in every offering. Beyond the traditional cup, they also offer larger sizes for catering and events.
Water Ice: The main attraction. Made with fruit, sugar, and water, their water ice is a dairy-free, gluten-free, and refreshing treat. Classic flavors like lemon, cherry, chocolate, and pineapple are always on the menu, along with other seasonal or rotating options like mango and strawberry. Many customers praise the real fruit flavor and ideal texture that is smooth, not chunky.
Ice Cream: For those who prefer a creamy indulgence, John's also offers a selection of soft-serve ice cream. Flavors typically include vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and butter pecan, as well as specialty options like coffee chocolate chip and vanilla birthday cake. The ice cream is a rich and satisfying complement to their lighter water ice.
Gelati: A true Philadelphia specialty, gelati is a layered treat that combines the best of both worlds—water ice and soft-serve ice cream. This creates a delightful mix of icy and creamy textures in every spoonful. You can choose any combination of their water ice and ice cream flavors to create your own unique gelati experience. This treat is particularly popular with those who can't decide between the two options.
Pretzels: To balance the sweetness, John's often has soft pretzels available. A common Philadelphia pairing, a salty, warm pretzel is the perfect counterpoint to the cold, sweet water ice, creating a classic local snack combination. Note that pretzels may sell out quickly, so it's best to get there early if you want one.

John's Water Ice is more than just a shop; it's a local icon. Several key features and highlights contribute to its legendary status in Philadelphia.
Decades of Tradition: Founded in 1945, John's has been a part of the city's fabric for over 75 years. This deep-rooted history gives the shop an authentic feel that newer businesses can't replicate. It's a place where you'll see people who came here as children now bringing their own families.
Authentic Philly "Wooder Ice": While the rest of the world might call it Italian ice, in Philadelphia, it's "wooder ice." John's is considered by many to be the gold standard of this regional delicacy. Its simple, high-quality ingredients and classic hand-cranked methods are a point of pride, maintaining a taste that has remained consistent for generations.
Family-Owned and Operated: The shop is currently run by the third generation of the Cardullo family. This family ownership ensures a personal touch and a continued commitment to the original recipe and community values. The passion and pride in their product are evident in every scoop.
Seasonal Operation: The shop typically opens for the warmer months, making its seasonal reopening a highly anticipated event in the neighborhood. This limited availability adds to the excitement and tradition, marking the official start of summer for many locals. The seasonal nature of the business ensures that the treats are associated with sunshine, outdoor fun, and happy memories.
Cash-Only Service: In a world of digital payments, John's maintains a classic, cash-only policy (though some customers report that Venmo is accepted). This old-school approach adds to the nostalgic charm and keeps the focus on the product and the experience. There is often an ATM on site for customer convenience, so a lack of cash doesn't have to ruin your visit.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This was some of the best water ice I’ve ever had! I got the lemon flavor and it was perfectly flavored!!! The line was way down the street but it went fast. My husband (not from Philly) was underwhelmed and shocked anyone could eat more than a small but this was probably his first water ice so I think his expectations were skewed. Prices were very fair and I was happy!
July 19 · Justine HulbertI’ve heard so much about John’s as one of the many best spots to get water ice in the city. So after a long days work, I decided to drive down and experience the goodness. I got a small pineapple. My only disappointment, they were out of pretzels or don’t have soft pretzels— I can’t remember, but I know I like pretzels with my water ice. I had to go elsewhere for that.Outside of that minor snafu, I did really enjoy the taste of real flavors in each spoonful.
April 30 · Zsavon MoniqueAffordable and tasty! I think I prefer water ice to Italian ice and slushies now. It was the perfect consistency. The mango and strawberry were both really good, and you can tell they make it from real fruit!
June 27 · Christine WeiIt was delicious. You walk up to side window easy menu options. Interacting with the staff was quick and courteous Got a lemon one and mango. Lemon was just the right balance of tart and sweet. Mango was smooth and not overly sweet. Both consistent from top to bottom of the cup.
May 14 · Martin HalupkaBest water ice in Philly, I started coming here as a child over 40 years ago. Cherry and chocolate is my go to water ice. I don’t even like chocolate ice cream, but water ice is a different story. If you like tart and sweet try lemon and pineapple. I make the drive from Washington to Philadelphia once a year and this is my first stop.
