Massey's Frozen Custard Introduce
For over half a century, Massey's Frozen Custard has been a beloved fixture in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, serving up delicious frozen treats that have become a staple for locals and visitors alike. First opened in 1949, this classic establishment has maintained its charm and dedication to quality, becoming a go-to spot for anyone with a craving for creamy, satisfying frozen custard. This isn't just a place to get ice cream; it's a piece of local history, a destination that evokes nostalgia and creates new memories with every visit. As a participating location on the Cumberland Valley Ice Cream Trail, Massey's stands as a testament to the rich culture of frozen desserts in our region. This article is your comprehensive guide to everything Massey's has to offer, written from the perspective of a local who knows that some of the best things in life are the simple, sweet pleasures.
The core of Massey's appeal lies in its high-quality frozen custard. As one customer on the Ice Cream Trail noted, they were impressed that the shop offered "different flavors other than just chop and vanilla." This variety, combined with fair prices, is a major draw. While soft serve is a classic, Massey's dedication to offering a rotating selection of flavors, such as mint chocolate, keeps the menu fresh and exciting for repeat customers. The menu also features a wide array of delicious sundaes, with one review mentioning a "blueberry" sundae on the menu. These sundaes are a great option for those looking for a more elaborate dessert, with options like banana splits and Arctic Mounts (soft serve blended with toppings) also available, as seen on their menu. The reputation and popularity of Massey's are also evident in how busy the place gets, a "good sign of a loved ice cream spot," as one reviewer put it. The fact that there is "plenty of seating outside" and "plenty of parking" shows that they are well-prepared for the crowds of satisfied customers.
It is important to acknowledge that, as with any long-standing establishment, opinions on consistency can vary. While many customers rave about the quality, one review expressed disappointment, stating that the "soft serve custard is not good anymore" and that it "use to be the best custard around." This kind of feedback highlights that while a business may have a long and storied history, the customer experience can change over time. However, the majority of public data and reviews point to a cherished local spot that provides a classic, enjoyable treat. The fact that it has been a Carlisle institution for so long and is a key part of the Cumberland Valley Ice Cream Trail speaks volumes about its enduring appeal and its place in the community's heart.
The atmosphere at Massey's is a blend of efficiency and classic charm. Customers walk "inside the lobby and order at the window/counter," which is a traditional and effective system for a high-volume, quick-service dessert spot. The presence of "plenty of staff to take your order and make it too" ensures that even during busy times, the wait is manageable. The lack of indoor seating, as noted in a review, reinforces its identity as a classic walk-up ice cream stand, with the focus on enjoying your treat outdoors on a nice day. This simple, no-frills approach puts the spotlight squarely on the quality of the frozen custard and the joy of a good dessert, which is exactly what many locals are looking for.
Finally, the enduring legacy of Massey's cannot be overstated. Since 1949, it has been a place where families have gone for generations. The original neon signs still beckon customers, a nod to its rich history. This continuity provides a sense of comfort and tradition that is increasingly rare today. For anyone in the Carlisle area, Massey's is more than just a place to get dessert; it's a connection to the past and a staple of the present.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Stopped here as part of the Cumberland Valley Ice Cream Trail. Just got the soft serve, but was impressed that they had different flavors other than just chop and vanilla! I got mint chocolate and vanilla. The price was def fair. The place was pretty busy so that’s definitely a good sign of a loved ice cream spot. They had various sundaes on the menu, like blueberry! There was plenty of seating outside, plenty of parking too.You walk inside the lobby and order at the window/counter so no where inside to eat. Plenty of staff to take your order and make it too. Next time I’ll try the sundaes!
August 02 · Kimberly ElizabethI dont know if they changed their recipie or what but this places soft serve custard is not good anymore. Use to be the best custard around. The choclate use to be super creamy and thick and now its dark slop. 0/10 only good thing was the sprinkles.
May 10 · Autumn LiddlePlace has great frozen treats and a variety of other things. Everyone inside was very nice and accomidating. Great local shops are always a pleasure to visit. Wish the outside seating was just a little more taken care of. Spills and sticky benches. Other than that, place is awesome.
September 01 · J ShugMassey’s, WHAT happened?! I have been coming for years. Massey’s hand dipped custard is the only custard I eat and I absolutely love it. Always so smooth an creamy and delicious. We went tonight and it was absolutely horrible. The texture was sooo off and literally had ice crystals. We also noticed that ever since the lovely college kids likely went home, the service is much different. We ordered smalls, which usually are packed tight and overflowing. Tonight, the bowls were half full. Super disappointed!! Please go back to your old ways!
June 07 · Rachel TrolingerI don't know what's happened but Massey's frozen custard is NO LONGER CUSTARD. It is ice milk garbage.I'll keep it short and sweet. The FDA requires that places advertising frozen custard, actually use custard. If management continues to serve Carlisle ice milk instead of custard, they're likely to get a visit. It's a shame. Just a few months ago they were fine. What's happening?
