Moxie's Introduce
Located in the heart of Wynantskill, Moxie's is more than just an ice cream shop; it’s a true local institution with a rich history and a passion for creating unique and delicious frozen treats. Since 1969, this family-run business has been delighting patrons with its homemade ice cream, using a super-premium 14% butterfat mix and natural flavors. The inviting, vintage-style gem has a history that dates back even further, to 1932, when the building served as a milk processing and bottling facility. The tradition of serving fresh, local dairy has continued for decades, making Moxie's a cherished part of the community fabric.
What sets Moxie's apart is its commitment to innovation and quality. Guided by the passionate Miss Pam, the shop is constantly introducing new and inventive flavors, while also maintaining a repertoire of customer favorites. Whether you’re a purist who loves a classic scoop or an adventurous eater looking for a new experience, you'll find something to love. The shop has a massive selection, including six international vanillas for a truly global tasting experience and unique "mystery flavors" that have ranged from sweet corn to dill pickle juice. This dedication to creative and high-quality ice cream is what has earned Moxie's a dedicated following and a reputation as a must-visit spot in the Capital District.
For many New Yorkers, a visit to an ice cream shop is a cherished summer tradition, and Moxie's perfectly captures that nostalgic, feel-good atmosphere. The shop is a hub of community activity, especially on special occasions like International Ice Cream Day, when the shop hosts family-friendly events. The welcoming environment, combined with the impressive variety of flavors, makes it a destination for locals seeking a memorable treat and a place to gather with friends and family. However, it's important to remember that Moxie's is a seasonal business, typically opening with a full stock on Mother's Day and staying open until the last days of August, when the last of the ice cream has been scooped.
Moxie's is situated at 1344 Spring Ave, Wynantskill, NY 12198, a location that offers a pleasant and accessible drive for residents of the Capital District. The shop is nestled in a residential area, providing a scenic and relaxed journey, particularly for those who enjoy a nice ride. The location is convenient for families, as it features a dedicated playground area for customers, allowing children to play while parents enjoy their treats. While there are multiple windows for ordering, it’s worth noting that the shop's unique layout and hand-written signs add to its vintage charm, but may require a moment to take in all the options.
Accessibility is generally good, and the shop is a popular stop for people traveling through the area. However, it is crucial for first-time visitors to be aware of a very important detail: Moxie's is a cash-only establishment. While this is part of its old-school charm, it has surprised some customers who were not prepared. A small sign on one of the windows indicates this policy, so it's a good idea to come prepared with cash to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ordering process. The combination of its residential setting and the cash-only policy makes for a unique, small-town experience that many locals appreciate.
The history of the building, which once housed the Wagar Brothers Dairy, is still visible today. The shop incorporates beams from the old dairy barn and even features a 1909 soda fountain in one of its service windows. This dedication to preserving its past adds a layer of depth and character that you won't find at a generic chain. The owner, Pam Allie-Morrill, is an excellent steward of this history and is always happy to share stories, including the one about a young Joseph Levitch, who would later become the famous comedian Jerry Lewis, once operating the soda fountain.
Moxie’s offers a wide array of services and treats, catering to all types of ice cream lovers. The shop’s dedication to quality and variety ensures that there is always something new to try.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Wonderful variety of ice cream! I have yet to find a flavor I don’t like. The best times to visit are on days like International Ice Cream Day, since there’s lots of activities going on that are family friendly. If you ride: the roads to Moxie’s are nice.Almost forgot: cash only.
July 20 · Sarah StewartBRING CASH!!! Pulling up I thought it was a very cute ice cream shop with a great playground for families with kids. They do have a large selection of unique ice cream flavors, but they’re missing the staple ones (cookies and cream, cookie dough, etc). We taste tested a few flavors and ordered but ended up disappointed in the small scoop sizes for the price. We go to A LOT of ice cream shops and they weren’t very decent sized scoops at all. And, after ordering, somebody walked up behind us and said “oh it’s cash only.” Which was a shock to us as we’d already ordered and didn’t realize this. Thankfully I was able to find some in the car; however with their overwhelming amount of hand written signs with flavors etc we missed the ONE small sign saying “cash only” on the window we didn’t even order at (there’s 4 windows to walk up to and it was on one furthest from the main parking lot). Overall - disappointed in this ice cream shop. I really wanted to love it, but there’s some other better ones in the Capital District.
July 12 · Tanesha CaytonDelicious homemade ice cream. Super yummy, extrea creamy, ice cream, with a wide selection of non-traditional flavors. Don't get me wrong, you'll find traditional flavors, too. It's a little off the beaten path, but it's definitely worth the drive.
July 15 · Betzy KennedyHave been going to Moxie’s for years. The ice cream is the best!Service is outstanding! And, the ambiance of it all is fantastic & fun for all.Recently, took a friend of mine from Massachusetts for her first time, and my four grandsons. Everyone was beyond pleased with their chosen flavors of ice cream. My favorite flavor is the “Blue Moon.” My grand boys had a blast playing on the playground, they did not want to leave. We love Moxie’s💙Miss Pam, Thank you for your kind service and patience while my grandsons were all trying to decide what they were going to have.
August 24 · Dawn BechardI went to Moxie's for the first time tonight with a few friends and it will be my last. The high school aged employee greeted us and was extremely sweet. She explained the flavors and answered our questions. Unfortunately she was also degraded, demeaned, and micromanaged by the owner the entire time. The owner yelled at her upon our arrival and told her to "look busy" even though she was clearly about to serve us. The owner then made fun of her for saying the wrong term when asking if we wanted our ice cream in a cone or cup and humiliated her. It was so hard to watch and the environment was so hostile because of the owner. When we asked if they accepted tips, the owner was extremely rude and condescending toward us, saying they did not accept them. Lastly, when the poor girl was handing me the chance, the owner was forcing her to count out every coin and then counting over her. It was so odd. I will never go back and I will be sharing this experience with every friend and family member I know. Let this be a lesson to the owner to treat people, especially her employees, with KINDNESS.
