Peterson's Ice Cream Depot Introduce
Nestled in the picturesque, historic town of Clifton, Virginia, Peterson's Ice Cream Depot offers a charming escape into the world of delightful frozen treats and classic American fare. More than just an ice cream shop, this family-owned and operated business has become a beloved local landmark, known for its unique atmosphere and a menu that goes beyond just scoops and cones. Housed in what was once an old train depot, the establishment embraces its historical roots, creating a festive and inviting environment that changes with the seasons and holidays, making every visit a truly unique experience for residents of Fairfax County and beyond.
Peterson's Ice Cream Depot prides itself on serving high-quality gourmet ice cream, much of which is made in-house. This commitment to fresh, homemade products using natural ingredients sets it apart from many other establishments. The owners, Tom and Jean Peterson, are Northern Virginia natives who took a dedicated course in ice cream production at Penn State University to perfect their craft. This passion for quality is evident in their rich, creamy flavors, which range from classic favorites to innovative, rotating selections. Beyond the ice cream, Peterson's also offers a selection of food products, including their popular "Dog Pound Deli" menu, ensuring that there's something to satisfy both sweet and savory cravings.
The charm of Peterson's extends to its ambiance. It's a place designed for enjoyment, whether you're bringing the family for an afternoon treat, catching up with friends, or simply seeking a moment of sweet indulgence. The outdoor seating provides a perfect spot to savor your dessert while soaking in the quaint surroundings of Clifton. While some customers have noted that the prices might be on the higher side, many acknowledge that the quality, portion sizes, and overall experience justify the cost. The shop aims to provide "delicious ice cream treats and food products, at a fair family value, and give away a smile and some fun in the process," a mission that resonates with many repeat visitors who consider it a cherished tradition.
Customers frequently highlight the distinctive and bold flavors found at Peterson's. For instance, "Chocolate Drama" is lauded for its rich chocolate intensity, while "Abracadabra" receives praise for its "double (maybe triple) ginger" notes, described as "superb" and "distinct, bold, creamy." These descriptions speak to the depth and creativity of their homemade offerings. While the claim of "homemade" ice cream has been questioned by one reviewer concerning a specific flavor (Key Lime), the general sentiment from their website and other reviews supports their commitment to crafting their own unique flavors. The focus on providing a diverse and interesting selection, including rotating options, keeps the menu exciting and encourages locals to return to discover new favorites.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Chocolate drama and Abracadabra....rich chocolate and double ( maybe triple) ginger. Superb flavor.....distinct, bold, creamy. For a "corner" of a town this was a great stop. Parking can be found at the surrounding places.
June 08 · Kyle SendgikoskiI'm shocked by how bad this place was considering the great google reviews! Everything was grossly overpriced. They charge $1.50 per topping, and 2 scoops of ice cream in a bowl is $10! Also, I don't believe their claim of the ice cream being home-made. I purchased the key lime flavor, and it tasted and looked incredibly artificial. They advertised on their sign that the ice cream contained graham cracker crust chunks. I received about 3 crumbs of crust in the entire 2 scoops (pictures attached). This place definitely seems like a tourist trap.
April 27 · Amber WrightWe always go to this ice cream store when we are in Clifton. It satisfies our family's sweet tooth after having lunch or dinner. I wish it had more seating. I wonder if they can get some space from the restaurant next door.We ordered 7 ice creams and it was such a beautiful day for it. It was not crowded even though it was Easter Sunday. Even during the fall season, if we are in Clifton, we always go to this ice cream store. My family and I are so happy that they are still thriving in Clifton!
April 27 · Lani B.The lines are long for a reason. They have experience and are good at what they do. I love soft serve and their chocolate soft serve never disappoints. But they have a wide variety of frozen custard, ice cream, gelato, shakes, etc. We have been enjoying their ice cream for years and my puppy loves their pup cup which is too small in his opinion but I think it's just the right size. 🤭
May 08 · Ramona CiorcilaBeen here a couple of times now and the 🍦 is absolutely wonderful, as well as the setting. They have a lovely little outdoor seating area in the back that is perfect for enjoying your order on a day the weather permits. Can't wait to go back and try something else.
