Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard Introduce
For many residents of Philadelphia and the wider Pennsylvania area, the arrival of spring is synonymous with one thing: the opening of Rita’s Italian Ice. A true local institution, Rita’s has been serving up its signature frozen treats for decades, becoming a cherished part of summer traditions for generations. The story of Rita’s is a classic Philadelphia tale, starting in 1984 when former Philly firefighter Bob Tumolo began selling Italian ice from his front porch in a suburb of the city. He used a recipe his mother made, adjusting it to include real fruit and enhance the flavors. Named after his wife, Rita’s Italian Ice was born and quickly gained a cult-like following for its refreshing and flavorful products.
The core of Rita’s appeal lies in its two main offerings: fresh Italian ice and creamy frozen custard. The Italian ice, often referred to by locals as "water ice," is made fresh daily on-site at each location. It’s a sweet, smooth, and deeply flavorful treat with a texture that is a unique cross between a sorbet and a densely packed snow cone. With a rotating selection of over 95 flavors, there's always something new to try, keeping the experience exciting for repeat customers. The frozen custard, a rich and decadent alternative to traditional ice cream, provides a perfect complement to the vibrant fruit flavors of the Italian ice. This combination is the basis for their most famous creation, the Gelati.
The popularity of Rita’s has grown far beyond its Philadelphia roots, with hundreds of locations now spread across the country. However, the brand’s origins and headquarters remain firmly planted in Pennsylvania, and for many locals, a trip to Rita's feels like a quintessential Philly experience. The Mt. Airy location, specifically at 8201 Stenton Avenue, continues this legacy. It's a place where families and friends gather to enjoy a treat and socialize, creating a neighborhood hub of happiness. Whether you’re a long-time fan with a favorite flavor combination or a newcomer looking to beat the heat, Rita’s offers a simple yet satisfying escape into a world of cool and delicious possibilities. A recent review highlighted a customer's love for the mango custard, which exemplifies the dedicated following that a good flavor can create, even among a wide variety of choices.
While a review did mention that the pretzels may not be made on-site anymore and a change in their quality, it's clear the main attractions—the Italian ice and frozen custard—remain a highlight. The pleasant attitude of a staff member also shows a commitment to customer service, a crucial element for any neighborhood establishment. For those seeking a taste of summer nostalgia or a new favorite dessert, Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard is a destination worth exploring right here in Philadelphia.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The pretzels are not made on site like back in the day. They are thick and doughy,no longer soft and tasty. The water ice was okay ,not overly sweet. But for some people it might be. The young lady that works there on Sunday has a pleasant attitude.
July 14 · Ruby WilliamsI absolutely love Rita's. Their products are very delicious. Do stop by and get you something. Mango Custard is my favorite.
May 14 · Toni “Queen Tea” MorningI remember when I was 21 years old the sister from this place hired me, and told me to cut my Beard off because the owner didn’t like Muslims. I did, it out of Desperation, I had nowhere to live and I needed some money so me being idiot I cut my beard off I work for maybe two hours when the owner came in he whispered to the lady who hired this guy she said I did. He said I don’t want this guy in here I was so hurt. I was so upset, I left in tears. I would never support this man. I will never support his establishment. I was raised on 7900 rugby Street. I have a commercial drivers license. I have vehicles have a home and a beautiful family. I have worked the whole city collecting trash and recycling cans. And I’m a pillar of this community. I really just wanted to share this with everybody. This spend on my heart for lotta years. Be careful who you spend your hard earned money at y’all. I never cut my beard off after that I had some run-ins after those situations when I was upstate in prison all my cell mates was Christians. I don’t care for this place, and this place only. Black ppl be careful spending your hard earn money with people who will belittle you and get away with it. This was Valuable lesson that I have learned over the years. In this was 23 years ago. June 09 · Robert RichardsonThursday, March 14, 2024, around 4:45 p.m. It was a beautiful day in the neighborhood. 75° in Sunny Philadelphia at Stenton Ave & Mt. Pleasant Ave. A great day for Rita's Water Ice. 2 gelatis and a vanilla custard. The young lady who waited on me was a doll. Upbeat personality and a kind demeanor. Thanks, everyone, at this location!
March 14 · Catherine WWell its back open. The guy working here today had the patience of a saint based on the idiot he had to deal with that I witnessed. He was polite the whole time and showed no sign of distress which is rare when dealing with people in this city. That deserve 4 stars alone but additionally, the scoop was perfectly sized, the flavor was scrumptious and Mt. Airy should be glad they are open again.
