SoCo Creamery Introduce
When the sun is shining in the Berkshires, or even when the snow is falling, there's one local spot that consistently brings a smile to the faces of residents and visitors alike: SoCo Creamery. Tucked away on a charming side street in Great Barrington, this micro-creamery has become a staple of the community, known for its dedication to creating exceptional, small-batch ice cream. Since its establishment in 2004, SoCo Creamery has been more than just a place to get a frozen treat; it’s a destination that embodies the spirit of local craftsmanship, quality ingredients, and a passion for flavor. The shop's reputation for delicious, high-quality offerings has spread far and wide, making it a must-visit for anyone with a love for authentic, handcrafted ice cream.
The story of SoCo Creamery is deeply rooted in New England values and a commitment to quality. The owners and staff believe that ice cream is an act of self-care, a means of celebration, and a shared experience that can bring people together. This philosophy is evident in every scoop. The business sources its dairy from a fourth-generation family farm in Vermont, ensuring a rich and creamy base for all of its flavors. Beyond that, the commitment to scratch-made ingredients is what truly sets them apart. From the cookie dough to the fudge ripple, many of the inclusions are handcrafted right in their own kitchen. This meticulous process ensures a level of freshness and quality that can be tasted in every bite. While the classic flavors are always available and perfected, the team at SoCo is constantly innovating, introducing new and surprising flavors every few months to keep things fresh and exciting for loyal customers. This dedication to both tradition and innovation is a key reason why SoCo Creamery has earned a place in the hearts of so many people in the Berkshires and beyond. It’s a true local gem that has been consistently recognized as one of the best ice cream shops in the region, a testament to its enduring quality and community focus.

SoCo Creamery offers a variety of services designed to cater to every ice cream lover's needs. The main attraction is, of course, the wide selection of handcrafted ice cream and sorbet available for scooping. Beyond the traditional cone or cup, they also have offerings for special occasions and for enjoying at home.
- Scoop Shop: The primary service is the in-store scoop shop, where customers can choose from a vast and ever-changing menu of flavors. The staff is trained to help you find the perfect flavor, and they offer samples to ensure you're completely satisfied with your choice.
- Take-Home Pints: For those who want to enjoy SoCo's delicious ice cream at home, pints are available for purchase. This is a popular option for locals who want to keep their freezers stocked with their favorite flavors.
- Dairy-Free Options: Recognizing that not everyone can or chooses to eat dairy, SoCo Creamery also provides a selection of dairy-free ice cream and sorbet flavors. This ensures that everyone can find a delicious treat to enjoy, without compromising on quality or flavor.
- Ice Cream Cakes: Perfect for birthdays and other celebrations, the shop creates custom ice cream cakes. These cakes are a popular way to make any occasion special, and they can be customized to your preferences. Cake orders must be placed at least 48 hours in advance to allow for proper preparation.
- Wholesale Distribution: While the retail scoop shop is the face of the business, SoCo Creamery also has a significant wholesale presence. Their pints and cups can be found in grocery stores and markets throughout New England and beyond, from Maryland to Maine, including in Whole Foods stores. This allows even more people to enjoy their handcrafted creations.
The unique features and highlights of SoCo Creamery are what truly make it stand out in the crowded ice cream market. It's not just the product itself, but the entire ethos of the business that makes it a local favorite.
- Handcrafted and Micro-Batched Ice Cream: All of the ice cream is made in small, micro-batches right in Great Barrington. This method allows for greater quality control and attention to detail, ensuring each batch is perfect.
- Commitment to Local and High-Quality Ingredients: The creamery prioritizes sourcing the best ingredients possible. This includes dairy from a family farm in Vermont and other local components whenever possible. They also use high-quality, international ingredients like Madagascar vanilla to create unparalleled flavors.
- Unique and Adventurous Flavors: Beyond the classic staples, SoCo Creamery is known for its inventive and unique flavors. Their menu is constantly evolving, with past offerings including Blueberry Honey Lavender and Mission Figs, which have earned them a reputation for being a place to try something new and exciting. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Good service. It's better to try different flavors to find what you like the most. Because some flavors were okay, some were delectable. My fave so far: the marzipan dates ice cream.
July 10 · Dian YustisianaSoCo has always been my favorite. They have a huge variety of flavors and offer a great quality of ice cream.I do feel their quality has been lacking lately. I'm not sure if there's been a change in recipe or something but the ice cream just seems a little different. Maybe too many flavors and a loss of quality control? It's still great but I think High Lawn farms has the upper hand in ice cream now.
July 02 · Suzanne WLast week we stopped in to kick off the Summer season with some ice cream. My wife got 4 pints of almond joy and I ordered a two scoop cone. When I was handed it I looked at it for a moment and said to myself this isn't two scoops, it is like 1 1/4. I mentioned it to the girl who then asked for it back, re-did it and gave it back to me. As I took it and walked out of the store, I looked again and thought this is like 1 1/2 scopes. I said forget it and we went on our way. On top of it they dropped their rewards program. I had points to use that are now worthless. Unfortunate, we have been enthusiastic customers forever. I am switching to the Milk Bar in Sheffield going forward.
June 07 · Jerry WeinstockIt's been a while since we have been in Great Barrington and some friends of ours recommended Soco creamery. They had lots of different flavors of ice cream including some that were made without dairy. I ordered a black raspberry dairyless one and it was really interesting, pretty sure it was a frozen yogurt flavor but still good!
May 15 · Matt Greilwhere do i begin. i like ice cream a lot, like a lot. i be munching to say the least, but damn. soco is just different. been going here since a wee lad and still go every time i can. the cinnamon, honey comb, black raspberry, etc all just unbelievably fire.not much else to say, but if you are in the area you have to go. ask them what they recommend so you get the full experience. if you don’t like it you don’t know what good ice cream is
