---The Original Rainbow Cone - Harwood Heights, as part of a long-standing Chicago institution, boasts several key features and highlights that draw customers, though recent local feedback also points to important operational considerations:
- The Iconic Rainbow Cone: This is the primary highlight. The unique method of slicing (not scooping) five distinct flavors—Chocolate, Strawberry, Palmer House (vanilla with cherries and walnuts), Pistachio, and Orange Sherbet—into one cone creates a visually stunning and multi-flavored experience. This signature item has been a beloved Chicago tradition since 1926.
- Generational Appeal and Nostalgia: For many in Illinois, The Original Rainbow Cone evokes strong feelings of nostalgia, having been a part of their childhoods. This connection makes it a popular spot for families to share a classic experience with younger generations.
- Diverse Menu Options: Beyond the original, the Harwood Heights location offers a wide array of other ice cream treats, including custom "Build Your Own Cones," various "Sliced Creations" with different flavor combinations (e.g., Chocolate Obsession, Orange Dream), sundaes, hand-spun shakes, and mini donuts. This ensures there's something for every preference.
- Ice Cream Cakes and Party Packs: The availability of customizable ice cream cakes and party packs makes it a convenient stop for celebrations and gatherings, offering a unique dessert option.
- Dedicated and Patient Staff (Individual Highlights): While there have been reported inconsistencies, specific employees, like "Katherine," are highlighted for being "excellent," "so patient," and capable of taking "complicated orders" with an "artistic flare." This suggests that when the right staff are on duty, the service can be exceptional.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge the recent critical feedback regarding operational issues at this specific location:
- Inconsistent Hours/Lack of Accountability: A significant concern raised by customers is the discrepancy between advertised operating hours (e.g., online) and actual closing times, often without clear communication or accountability. This can lead to wasted trips and frustration.
- Customer Service Inconsistencies: Some reviews indicate issues with professionalism and a perceived lack of regard for customer time and experience, particularly in situations involving disputes over advertised offerings or service.
These points provide a balanced view, highlighting the enduring appeal of The Original Rainbow Cone's products alongside areas where operational consistency and customer communication at the Harwood Heights location could be improved for an even better local experience.

This unique five-flavor sliced cone is not just a dessert; it's a piece of Chicago history and a truly distinctive treat that stands apart from standard scooped ice cream. For many, enjoying a Rainbow Cone is a cherished memory passed down through generations, making it a powerful draw for families looking to share a classic local experience. However, it is important for local users to be aware of the inconsistencies in customer service and posted operating hours that some reviews have highlighted. The Original Rainbow Cone - Harwood Heights Reviews
managementwalking
★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I grew up on the Original Rainbow Cone in Evergreen Park, but unfortunately I have to give this location 1 star (I'd give it 0 stars if I could). Tonight, after verifying online this location closes at 10:30pm, I made a special trip to come out to get my niece Rainbow Cone for her 1st time ever. After walking in at 9:35pm and looking at the menu board, I was told by an employee that Rainbow Cone was closed early on Sundays. I mentioned to her it says on their website, it says it's open until 10:30pm. Then she said something about a freezer being cleaned. Well, maybe Rainbow Cone should account for this "special freezer cleaning" for their hours on their website so people don't waste their time driving to get ice cream. No accountability whatsoever. Very sad for a company I grew up loving. Sad to say, but I'll never be visiting this Rainbow Cone location or any other of their locations again, and I'll urge my friends and family to do the same.
July 06 · PT CruiseKatherine at the Rainbow Cone is excellent. She is so patient and takes complicated orders excellent. So seems to be happy to prepare your order with an almost artistic flare. Just stand back and watch her work. She was patient in hearing what 3 kids order.
June 07 · JB CVisited this place while on vacation a while ago. Most staff seemed clueless, management was non-existent... Service in general just wasn't there. Can't say I'd go back.Only saving grace was the one smile I saw from the server Katherine who finally took my order. She was very pleasant.
July 05 · Kurly YoroBest Ice cream ! Loved it. Recommend it
June 02 · Юлия ЧипижукDear Ally, I don't know if I spelled your name right, but thank you so much for serving our group with kindness when we walked in. I appreciate you giving me a different scoop of ice cream when I noticed something was wrong with the first one (even though you probably had many other tasks to be doing). I hope you have a great day.
