The Original Rainbow Cone - Ice Cream Truck Introduce
For residents of Illinois, a visit to Chicago's famous Museum Campus is often made complete with a trip to The Original Rainbow Cone. While the brand has several permanent locations, its ice cream truck, situated at 1200 S DuSable Lake Shore Dr, brings this beloved Chicago tradition to a convenient and scenic location. Since 1926, The Original Rainbow Cone has been delighting customers with its unique approach to ice cream, featuring five distinct flavors famously sliced, not scooped, onto a single cone. This method ensures that with every lick, you get a taste of each of the five flavors, creating a harmonious and memorable experience. The truck’s presence on the Museum Campus makes it an ideal stop for families, students, and tourists who have spent the day exploring the Field Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, or the Adler Planetarium.
The hype around The Original Rainbow Cone is rooted in its long history and the distinct combination of its five signature flavors: Chocolate, Strawberry, Palmer House (New York vanilla with cherries and walnuts), Pistachio, and Orange Sherbet. While some find the combination to be a unique and delightful medley of tastes, as with any classic, it's not for everyone. Customer reviews have noted that some people find the overall flavor profile "too sweet" or that "the flavors didn't even go well together," but this feedback is often balanced by praise for specific flavors, like the orange sherbet and the chocolate. The experience is what truly matters, and for many, trying the rainbow ice cream for the first time is a cherished moment, especially after a long walk around the iconic Chicago attractions. The generous serving sizes are also a highlight, with one cup being "a lot larger than I had expected," making it a treat that can easily be shared.
Beyond the flavors, The Original Rainbow Cone represents a piece of Chicago's history. Its founder, Joseph Sapp, opened the original location on the city's South Side in 1926, and the recipe has remained unchanged for nearly a century. This commitment to tradition is a significant part of the brand's identity and is why it holds such a special place in the hearts of many locals. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I wouldn't recommend if you're not a fan of very sweet desserts/ice cream. Overall it was pretty good, but too sweet for my tastes. It was still nice to try the rainbow ice cream though for the experience, and after a long walk at the Shedd Aquarium. The cup was a lot larger than I had expected. It was quite a bit of ice cream to have. A couple could share one cup pretty easily in my opinion. You lose the aesthetic value when ordering in a cup, but it's much easier to eat than in a cone.
July 28 · Chris HI don't get the hype. The ice cream did not tasted completely average and some of the flavors didn't even go well together. I did like the orange sherbet and the chocolate flavors though, but I would never go out of my way to buy it again
June 30 · Pallavi JoshiAfter checking out the Shedd Aquarium, I wanted to try the Original Rainbow Cone, which has been a Chicago staple since 1926. It was ready within minutes of placing the order. The waffle cone was stacked with slices of Chocolate Ice Cream, Strawberry Ice Cream, Palmer House Ice Cream, Pistachio Ice Cream, and Orange Sherbet. It was delicious and a great way to cool off on a hot summer day!
May 05 · Samantha LeeIt’s a good treat for a hot summer day like yesterday though the ice cream is too sweet for my taste! Not sure what’s the hype about it but Pistachio favour is rather nice! Overall, taste like those bulk ice-cream one could get in a supermarket! It’s an outdoor vendor in front of the museum, so not a lot of atmosphere but with the nice chicago skyline in front!
August 28 · JamesWas beyond thrilled to see the ORC truck in Schererville, IN parked in front of Bueno and immediately turned around to confirm it was not just wishful thinking or an apparition on my part. The Orginal Rainbow Cone is as delicious, cool, and refreshing now as it was back then during my childhood. Like everything else, cost of a cone went up, but we'll its worth it. The server was extremely pleasant and accommodating. Hope it's a permanently fixture!
