Vanderwende Ice Cream Introduce
For many Delaware residents, a trip to the beach isn't complete without a stop at a local institution. Located in Greenwood, Vanderwende Ice Cream is more than just a place to get a scoop; it's a genuine taste of southern Delaware's agricultural heritage. Since the 1950s, the Vanderwende family has been dedicated to their dairy farm, a commitment that has evolved into the beloved creamery we know today. Their philosophy is simple: use high-quality, farm-fresh ingredients to create small-batch, homemade ice cream that’s rich, creamy, and full of flavor. This isn't just a business; it's a family tradition, and that care is evident in every single spoonful. The atmosphere is unpretentious and inviting, a perfect reflection of the surrounding rural landscape. Whether you’re a long-time local or a visitor passing through, a visit to Vanderwende's is a delightful experience that connects you directly to the land and the people who work it. It's a place where the simple pleasure of an ice cream cone becomes a cherished memory, and the quality of the product speaks for itself. The dedication of the family and their staff to creating a delicious product has made Vanderwende's an essential part of the summer routine for countless Delawareans.
The Vanderwende family has owned and operated their dairy farm since 1954, starting with a small herd and a big dream. Over the years, the farm has grown, as has their passion for producing the best possible dairy products. In 1999, the family decided to take the next logical step and began making their own ice cream on the farm. They started with just a few flavors, but the immediate popularity of their rich, homemade product led them to expand their offerings and eventually open their iconic creamery location. What makes Vanderwende's particularly unique is that the ice cream is truly farm-to-cone. The cows are milked on the same land where the creamery stands, ensuring that the milk used is as fresh as it can possibly be. This direct-from-the-farm approach is a major reason why the ice cream has such a distinct, premium quality that is hard to replicate. The family's commitment to quality and tradition has created a product that stands out, and they have also made a point to be involved in the local community, which has helped to solidify their reputation as a beloved local business. They have a proud tradition of supporting their community and a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere that makes every customer feel welcome.
The main Vanderwende Ice Cream location is situated at 8374 Hickman Road in Greenwood, Delaware. Its placement makes it a strategic and popular stop for anyone traveling through southern Delaware. Located just off of Route 16, which connects to Route 113 and other major highways, it is a convenient "pitstop to break up the drive from the city to the beach, or vice versa," as one customer noted. The creamery is set on the family farm, which adds to its charm and authentic feel. The setting is picturesque, with views of the cows and fields that provide the very ingredients for the ice cream. There is ample on-site parking available, making it easy for both locals and travelers to pull in and grab a treat without any hassle. While the shop is mainly open during the summer months to serve the influx of seasonal traffic and locals, its reputation for quality ensures that people make the trip whenever they can. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Anytime is ice cream time! This location is mainly open during the summer months. It is a great pitstop to break up the drive from the city to the beach, or vice versa. Vanderwendes makes some of the best farm-fresh ice cream around. It can get busy at times but its always worth the stop. I order some Peanut Butter Fudge Crunch in a waffle cone today. It was so good! Prices are reasonable for what you get. The staff mainly consists of younger kids working their summer jobs and they are fairly friendly, and helpful.
May 04 · Eric FeazelDelicious ice cream. Didn’t take a photo but we got the Mint Oreo, Salty Caramel, and Holy Cow (vanilla fudge with peanut butter cup), and all 3 flavors were amazing
July 14 · Yotam CohenExcellent ice cream! We got peach, rocky road, and pineapple orange. I noticed a lot of people ordered milkshakes. I would recommend it is worth turning around for.
July 07 · J StService left a lot to be desired. Visited on our way from vacation and the place was empty at 2 on a weekday. The employee came out from the back, said nothing, then asked what we wanted. I gave my order and she asked what toppings, which I told her. She made my order but didn't put the toppings on. Then tossed it on the counter and said what else. When I asked for the toppings she gave a huff and basically rolled her eyes. Then my daughter asked for two scoops and the employee was like "do you know how much 2 scoops is?" Like judging her for ordering 2 scoops instead of one. I get it that we all have a bad day here and there, but treating us like we were a bother and giving an attitude of judgement rather then just completing the order and moving on is wildly inappropriate. The ice cream was good. Sad how bad service can ruin a business. I'd suggest some employee training or maybe a meditation hour. Hope her day gets better.
July 03 · Amanda BakerWent and picked up a coconut, banana and vanilla shake. 2 young boys were working the place, they took their time, and they were wonderful. $7 for a large shake with whip cream and a cherry.
