Via Lactea Introduce
For residents of New Haven and the wider Connecticut region, discovering a truly exceptional dessert spot is a treat in itself. Via Lactea, a dedicated vegan ice cream shop, has quickly become a local favorite, not just for those following a plant-based diet, but for anyone who appreciates high-quality, delicious frozen treats. Located conveniently in the heart of New Haven, this shop has carved out a unique niche by focusing on coconut-based ice cream that is so rich and creamy, it's often preferred over traditional dairy options. Via Lactea's commitment to crafting unique, flavorful, and accessible desserts makes it a standout destination in Connecticut's culinary landscape.
The core of Via Lactea's appeal lies in its innovative approach to ice cream. Instead of relying on traditional dairy, their creations are made with a coconut base, which provides a naturally rich and velvety texture that many customers find even better than conventional ice cream. As one enthusiastic customer noted, the texture and taste are "somehow way better than dairy-based ice cream," offering a sweet experience "without that heavy feeling afterwards." This makes it an ideal choice for anyone with lactose intolerance, dairy allergies, or simply those looking for a lighter yet still indulgent dessert. The shop’s dedication to this high-quality, plant-based model ensures that every scoop is a testament to the fact that vegan treats can be just as, if not more, satisfying than their dairy counterparts.
Beyond the product itself, Via Lactea has cultivated a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. The staff is consistently praised for being "kind, informative, and happy to go out of their way to help a first timer." This friendly and helpful service makes the experience enjoyable for everyone, whether they are a long-time vegan or someone new to plant-based desserts. The shop’s community-minded spirit is also evident in their special offers, such as a generous teacher discount on Tuesdays, a detail that is greatly appreciated by local educators. This combination of an exceptional product and a positive, community-focused environment has earned Via Lactea a dedicated following among New Haven locals and visitors alike.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Perfect vegan ice cream in the heart of New Haven. This place is excellent for any vegan looking for a tasty treat. The staff was kind, informative, and happy to go out of their way to help a first timer. The ice cream itself is coconut based, making it rich and creamy. There are a diverse array of flavors on display. The waffle cones are chocolatey and delicious as well. A single scoop and a waffle cone will run you less than $10 as well, making it a relatively affordable vegan dessert. I cannot recommend this place enough!
June 28 · EGKunzI am obsessed with Vía Láctea!! Stumbled upon an instagram post about this place one day and honestly, life has never been the same. I came about 3 times in the span of 2 weeks because they have so many unique flavors and I needed to try them all!! The texture and taste is somehow way better than dairy-based ice cream. It’s sweet, but without that heavy feeling afterwards. I don’t think I’ll ever go anywhere else. Aside from making insanely delicious ice cream, they offer a teacher discount on Tuesdays, which I really appreciate. They're also dog-friendly, and they sell peanut butter pupsicles for your fur babies :) I will be back often!
April 26 · kate saboVery tastefully designed ice cream shop (see what I did there?) with a great variety of ice cream flavors, real wholesome ingredients without junk made in-house! December 14 · Dustin MandreVisited many times. Great flavor. The ingredients they use is superb and texture is very nice for a vegan ice cream
April 03 · Dacheng ZhaoI have multiple food allergies and intolerances, including milk and gluten, and this place is a dream come true for me. I had one scoop vanilla and one scoop pistachio-almond in a bowl, with a gluten-free dark matter cone. My partner had the coquito flavored one, which tasted just like real coquito. The vanilla was everything a vanilla icecream should be and more. It was seriously the most perfectly balanced vanilla icecream. The pistachio-almond had a delightful sweet toasted almond flavor, with the pistachio being more subtle, that reminded me of pignoli cookies. There were a liberal amount of almonds in the icecream. The cone itself was fantastic. Nobody would know it was gluten-free without notification. The 45-minute commute was well worth the effort, and we definitely plan to return.
