More than just an ice cream shop, it is a place where history and sweet memories are served up daily. This article provides a comprehensive overview of this beloved establishment, highlighting its unique history, popular offerings, and the reasons it remains a staple for many Illinois residents. For those in the Carbondale area and beyond, Wazo's Big Chill offers a blend of nostalgia and quality that makes it a must-visit destination.
Wazo's Big Chill is known to many as the former Dairy Queen, a history that contributes significantly to its sentimental value. This heritage is a major part of its identity, as it has been a fixture in the community for a long time, serving generations of families. The transition from one name to another has not diminished its role as a local gathering spot. Instead, it has preserved a sense of continuity and tradition. This historical connection is a powerful draw for patrons who grew up visiting the location, and it’s a key part of the "home town feeling" that one customer so fondly mentioned. The business is built on a foundation of hard work and pride, a sentiment that is palpable to those who visit.
Customer reviews consistently paint a picture of a friendly, welcoming, and high-quality establishment. One highly enthusiastic review expressed joy that the place is "still here after all this time," highlighting the emotional attachment many people have to the location. This same review praised an employee named "Sandra" for providing "outstanding customer service" for what seems like a very long time. This personal touch and the recognition of long-standing, dedicated staff members are a testament to the strong community ties that Wazo's Big Chill has cultivated. The review also pointed out a nostalgic detail—the availability of "crunch" for ice cream—a simple topping that brings back a flood of memories for many.
Another glowing review reinforced these themes, describing the shop as a "friendly, home town feeling ice cream shop" with a history of "hard work and pride." The reviewer was impressed with the "very diverse menu" that has "just about something for everyone," which is a key feature for a community-focused business. The staff were described as "polite," "upbeat," and genuinely enjoying their roles, which contributes to a "pleasant & comfy atmosphere." The menu at Wazo's Big Chill is indeed a point of pride, offering a wide array of options that go beyond basic scoops. While the full menu is extensive, it includes classic items like cones, dipped cones, sundaes, shakes, and malts. For those who love a blended treat, they offer "Concretes," a popular choice for many. They also have specialty items like Strawberry Short Cake, Banana Splits, and even a "Brownie Earthquake." This diverse selection ensures that every member of the family, regardless of their preference, can find a delicious treat. The menu's variety is a significant feature that distinguishes it as a full-service dessert destination, not just a simple ice cream stand.
Furthermore, Wazo's Big Chill also serves other kinds of drinks and treats, catering to a broader audience. Items like floats, slushes, smoothies, and frozen blended coffee are available, along with hot beverages like coffee and hot chocolate. This variety makes the shop a great stop for any time of day and in any season, not just a place for a cold treat in the summer. They even offer a "pup cup," a delightful detail that shows their welcoming nature extends to all members of the family. The menu's depth and breadth are a major part of what makes this business so enduring.
In conclusion, Wazo's Big Chill is a true Carbondale institution. It's a place where the past meets the present, offering nostalgic charm, high-quality products, and exceptional customer service. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am so happy that this place is still here after all this time. The old Dairy Queen. So memories as a kid. There's an employee, I believe her name is "Sandra" has worked there forever and is still giving outstanding customer service! As long as they are opened, I will stop each visit back home. This is the only place who still has "crunch" for your ice cream! So nostalgic!!
April 14 · Mary LavettaI really like this friendly, home town feeling ice cream shop. This place has history. Been serving the community a long time with hard work and pride. They serve delicious ice cream. They have a very diverse menu with just about something for everyone. The staff are polite and seem up beat and even enjoy their roles at this small but clean shop. It has a very pleasant & comfy atmosphere. Well done Carbondale. Well done.
April 24 · Daniel PaceReliving my college days. Had strawberry sundae and it was SO GOOD...fresh strawberries OMG. Thank you Mark and crew!
April 07 · Jackie TurbotWas a DQ, but they didn’t want to add the grill so now it’s a funky local hotspot to chill.
March 09 · Andy RobinsonI did a header off the cement stair dropped my ice cream. They checked on me made me a new ice cream a nurse was even there and checked on me which I appreciate because I know the risks that they incur with not being allowed to be good Samaritans. So I highly recommend this place for polite people are aplenty and if you embarrass yourself by taking a dive they'll even remake you an ice cream and help in any way you need.
