Dairy Queen (Treat) Introduce
Dairy Queen (Treat), located on N U.S. Hwy 31 N in Traverse City, is a long-standing fixture in the community, bringing the joy of classic American ice cream treats to locals and visitors alike. As a widely recognized franchise, Dairy Queen has built a reputation on its signature soft-serve ice cream, which is the foundation of their famous Blizzards, cones, and sundaes. This specific location focuses on a "Treat" menu, which means its offerings are centered around these beloved desserts. It's a place that many people in Michigan have fond memories of, and this particular spot continues that tradition, serving up the familiar flavors that have made Dairy Queen a household name. Whether you're looking for a refreshing cone on a warm day or a decadent Blizzard to satisfy a major sweet tooth, this Dairy Queen is a convenient spot to get your fix.
However, it's important to note that a "Treat" location has a more limited menu compared to a full-service Dairy Queen that serves burgers and other hot food. A customer review points this out, expressing disappointment that the location only serves hot dogs and not the full range of DQ Grill & Chill menu items like hamburgers or chicken tenders. While this might be a letdown for some, it's a key distinction to be aware of when planning a visit. The focus here is primarily on the frozen desserts that made the brand famous. Another review highlighted significant issues with both product quality and service. A customer was very unhappy with a chocolate malt made with vanilla ice cream and very little chocolate sauce, and felt the staff was unhelpful when they tried to get more chocolate sauce. Another customer noted cleanliness issues with the outdoor dining area and a staff member using an inappropriate cleaning product on their table. These specific instances, while not representative of every experience, suggest that management and product consistency may vary. The strength of this location, when it's operating at its best, lies in its ability to quickly provide the classic DQ treats that customers know and love.
This Dairy Queen (Treat) is situated at 1764 N U. S. Hwy 31 N, Traverse City, MI 49686. Its location on a major highway is a significant advantage for accessibility. U.S. Hwy 31 N is a primary route for both local residents commuting through the area and tourists traveling to and from Traverse City's many attractions, particularly those along the scenic northern Michigan shoreline. Its roadside presence makes it an easy stop for those on the go, whether they're heading home from work, on their way to a day at the beach, or just passing through.
The location offers outdoor dining, which can be a nice option during pleasant weather. This is a classic feature of many standalone ice cream shops and is appreciated by those who want to enjoy their treat outside. While there have been some comments about the cleanliness of the outdoor area, it does provide an option for customers who prefer to eat outside. The drive-thru service is a major highlight, as it allows for quick and convenient service without even having to leave your car. This is especially useful for families with young children or anyone in a hurry. The ample parking space is also a benefit, making it easy to pull in and out. The combination of its convenient highway location and dedicated service options like the drive-thru makes this a very accessible spot for a wide range of customers, from those on a long road trip to locals making a quick stop on a busy day.
The menu at this Dairy Queen (Treat) is focused on its core dessert offerings, with a very limited selection of food. This concentration allows the staff to specialize in creating the iconic frozen treats that the brand is famous for.
- Blizzards: The star of the show, these are a thick, blended treat featuring DQ's soft-serve ice cream mixed with a variety of candies, cookies, and other flavorful add-ins. They are available in many flavors.
- Soft-Serve Cones: A simple and classic dessert, offering the choice of vanilla, chocolate, or twist soft-serve, with the option to get it dipped in a hard, flavored coating.
- Sundaes: A traditional dessert featuring soft-serve topped with a variety of syrups or sauces, whipped cream, and a cherry.
- Shakes and Malts: These are hand-spun, thick beverages made from DQ's soft-serve ice cream. They are a rich and satisfying option for those who prefer a drinkable treat.
- Hot Dogs: The only food item mentioned in reviews, this is a very limited savory option for customers who are looking for a small meal in addition to their dessert.
- Dilly Bars and Other Novelties: This location likely carries a selection of the pre-packaged DQ novelties, which are great for a quick grab-and-go option.
The menu's focus is on what DQ does best: classic frozen desserts. While the limited food menu might not appeal to everyone, the wide range of treat options ensures that those with a sweet tooth will find something to enjoy.
This particular Dairy Queen location has several features that define the customer experience, both positive and negative, as highlighted by public data.
- "Treat" Focused Menu: This is a key feature, as it means the menu is limited to ice cream and desserts, with only a few simple food items like hot dogs. This is different from the full "Grill & Chill" locations.
- Drive-Thru Service: The convenience of a drive-thru is a major highlight, allowing customers to get their orders quickly without leaving their vehicle. This is a crucial service for people on the move.
- Outdoor Seating: The availability of outdoor tables is a nice touch for those who want to sit and enjoy their treat on a pleasant day.
- Iconic Brand Recognition: As a well-known national franchise, customers have a built-in familiarity with the products and brand, which often draws them in. People know what a Blizzard is and what to expect.
- Potential Inconsistencies: Based on customer feedback, there may be some inconsistencies in product quality and service. One review noted a poor-quality malt and unhelpful staff, while another mentioned concerns about cleanliness and improper cleaning practices. This suggests a varying experience for customers.
These features paint a picture of a location that, while convenient and part of a beloved brand, may not always deliver a flawless experience, a factor worth considering for potential customers.

For locals in the Michigan region, this Dairy Queen (Treat) is a convenient option for a quick and familiar dessert, especially for those who appreciate the convenience of a drive-thru. Its location on a major highway makes it an easy stop for people running errands or traveling through the Traverse City area. While the limited "Treat" menu might be a disappointment for those expecting a full hot food selection, it's a perfect destination for anyone with a specific craving for an iconic Blizzard or a classic soft-serve cone. The brand familiarity offers a sense of comfort and a taste of nostalgia that many people seek. However, it's prudent for locals to be aware of the mixed reviews regarding service and product quality, which suggests that while it can be a quick and satisfying stop, the experience may not always be consistent. For many, the promise of a classic DQ treat outweighs these potential issues, making it a viable and popular choice for a sweet indulgence in the Traverse City community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm not very impressed with the service here. This place only serves hot dogs when DQ is popularly known for hamburgers, chicken tenders, fries, etc. This place needs a major upgrade to its menuNot to mention that when we arrived, one off the outdoor dining area tables was dirty, and the employee who served me came and wiped down the table me and my mom were sitting at with glass cleaning rather than sanitizer.
July 03 · Keneniah Williamsthey made a chocolate malt with vanilla ice cream and hardly no chocolate sauce in it.... I have never had... something made so bad.... I have never had a problem at any other dairy Queen! when I asked the staff if I could buy some chocolate sauce on the side to add to it they gave me such a hard time and I left and I left my malt there too!!! definitely managed very poorly and poor product!!!
April 22 · Jenise KanzlirschovaI don't understand why if I order a regular sized Orange Julius and a cup of ice cream why the staff is unable to put both of those paid products in a larger cup. And then if you are paying with card they have the audacity to ask you for a tip like they didn't tell me to (metaphorically) go screw myself on my order that I had to diy put together in my car.Don't get me wrong hot dogs are pretty good and the ice cream is always good I just wish the staff members were more capable of doing things instead of telling customers no especially as something as simple as this.
May 01 · Lucas SummersThe staff here is the best. I came here as my final meal due to my body holding a failed kidney for so long, but a worker here offered to give me his for $1.06, and now I am able to write this review today.
July 12 · Beans KousakaVery inattentive service as the staff was too busy looking at their phones to pay attention. Furthermore the product had bits of other stuff that did not belong like who wants Reeses cup bit mix on with a orange shake it’s just not good.
