King's Homemade Ice Cream Introduce
For residents and visitors of Lewes, Delaware, some things just feel like a part of the local fabric. King's Homemade Ice Cream is undoubtedly one of them. More than just a place to grab a cold treat, this family-owned shop has become a cherished institution since it first opened its doors in this historic seaport town. With a deep commitment to tradition, quality ingredients, and a welcoming atmosphere, King's offers a genuine taste of coastal Delaware. It’s a place where families make memories, where the line out the door on a warm summer evening is a happy sign of community, and where every scoop is a testament to a decades-long legacy. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about this local gem, from its accessible location and delicious offerings to the unique features that make it a favorite among locals.
The story of King's Homemade Ice Cream in Lewes began in 1981, when Tom and Chris King expanded their family's business from its original location in nearby Milton. They sought to bring their homemade recipes to a new community, and the historic charm of Lewes provided the perfect setting. They started in a small walk-in shop with no seating and with the help of a few local students, quickly built a loyal following. A year later, their growing popularity led them to move across the street to their current and now iconic location at 201 2nd Street. In 2010, the tradition was passed to the third generation of the King family, with their daughter Chelsea and her husband Rudy taking over ownership. This continued family ownership is a big part of what makes King's so special; you can feel the dedication and personal touch in everything they do. They've maintained a philosophy of supporting local charities, school programs, and town events, making them a true pillar of the community rather than just a commercial establishment. This commitment to the community is a major reason why many locals feel such a strong connection to the shop. When you visit, you're not just a customer; you're part of a tradition that has been enjoyed by generations of Delawareans.
King's Homemade Ice Cream is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Lewes at 201 2nd Street. This prime spot places it within a short and scenic walk of many of the town's other quaint shops, popular eateries, and historic landmarks. The shop's central location makes it an ideal stop during a day of exploring, whether you've just come back from a day at the beach or are simply strolling through the town's charming streets. For those arriving by car, parking in downtown Lewes is available, but it's important to be aware of the local regulations. During the peak season, from May 1st through October 14th, metered parking is in effect from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. You can find metered on-street parking and several metered lots throughout the area. However, there are also some non-metered (free) parking options a bit further out, such as a lot off of Schley Avenue and the Otis Smith Park parking lot, which offers all-day parking. For visitors who prefer not to drive, the shop's downtown location is highly walkable, allowing for a pleasant and easy trip on foot from many of the surrounding neighborhoods and attractions.

The quality of the ice cream itself is a major draw, but it's the entire experience that truly captures the hearts of locals and visitors alike. The shop has a charming, old-fashioned feel that adds to its appeal. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, making you feel right at home the moment you step inside. You can grab your ice cream and either enjoy it indoors or take it to go and walk around the beautiful little town by the water. They are also known for their homemade ice cream which is made one delicious batch at a time, using over 100 recipes that allow them to offer a wide variety of classic and seasonal flavors throughout the year. King's even has a few benches just outside the shop, which are pet-friendly, so you can enjoy your treat alongside your furry friend. On top of that, they have a strong reputation for being family-oriented. They're quick to help out, and they are especially patient and kind with children. One customer review recounted a story of an employee giving their grandson a new ice cream cone right away after he accidentally dropped his, highlighting the shop's friendly and welcoming customer service. These small, thoughtful gestures are a big part of why King's has maintained its reputation as a beloved local gem for so many years.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Omg the best homemade ice cream ever. This place is so quaint and family orientated. The atmosphere was amazing, a great place to go after a long day on the beach. My grandson dropped his ice cream on the floor as soon as he sat down, and they gave him another right away as if he was part of the family lol. There was a line outside but not a long wait. The locals knew the drill, that was keep the door shut untill you could get in and the bugs can stay out lol. The line moved fast . You could sit in and enjoy or walk around the beautiful little local town by the water. Great local hidden gem.
June 18 · Stephanie Wilkersonvery good ice cream and they offer many flavors and sizes and i was so obsessed w how the little cone looked 🥹! very kind staff as well!
June 11 · nicole martinezOne of my favorite ice cream stops. Be patient, the lines move fast but please, look at the board and gather your clans order before you are asked for it.
July 15 · Annette StellhornMade a special trip here this evening to try out some ice cream, and they were closed, even though this listing says they’re open until 10pm (we arrived at 9:35).Update your hours on Google. Disappointment, as we had saved this and have to leave the area to go back home tomorrow.
May 14 · Lincoln SlagelVery disappointed with the service here last night. We’ve never had a problem with Kings and love their ice cream. That’s why on our last night in Lewes we promised everyone some ice cream from Kings. My cousin and I showed up at 8:50 for ice cream and to grab some things for others at the house. Knowing full well that the establishment closes at 9. Now I used to work at an ice cream shop so I understand that before close can be stressful, however there is no reason to be rude and turn down customers. We were waiting on the outside as the inside was full. But as we were waiting the employees told inside customers to turn the sign to closed! Meanwhile it’s 8:55 and the business is very well still open. We tried to walk in when others left, but we were literally yelled at by the employees to leave. Absolutely unacceptable for future paying customers! I even showed the workers my phone that said it was 8:57 and they refused our business. When we got home everyone was disappointed we came back empty handed. So others beware you have to show up 30 minutes before close if you want them to take your order!
