Milkshakes and Ice Cream Sodas: In addition to scoops, they offer milkshakes and ice cream sodas, catering to those who prefer a blended or fizzy ice cream treat. One review noted an ice cream soda was "well executed and delicious," even if not a frequently ordered item.
Extensive Candy Selection: Sweets on Third functions as a candy shop as well, offering a mix-and-match selection of old-fashioned wrapped candy, bulk candy, and fine chocolates from brands like Buddy Squirrel. This provides a diverse range of confections beyond ice cream.

Sweets on Third, located at 119 3rd Ave in Baraboo, Wisconsin, offers a compelling mix of historical charm, high-quality products, and a diverse menu that makes it a suitable and appealing destination for local residents. While acknowledging specific concerns raised by some customers, the overall experience at this establishment has many features that resonate positively within the community.
A significant draw for Wisconsin locals is the shop's unique ambiance. Its "old world charm" and beautifully restored soda fountain evoke a sense of nostalgia and provide a pleasant, inviting atmosphere that sets it apart from modern chain establishments. This immersive environment, where one can "imagine a soda jerk from the 50's," creates a memorable experience that goes beyond just eating ice cream. It's a place where families can create new traditions and enjoy a taste of history.
The commitment to quality, particularly through serving Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream made with real Wisconsin dairy, is another strong factor in its local suitability. Supporting local and regional producers is often important to Wisconsin residents, and the rich, buttery flavors of this premium ice cream are consistently praised. The unique and innovative menu items, like "ice cream nachos" and homemade sodas from an authentic tap, demonstrate a creative spirit that keeps the offerings fresh and exciting for repeat visitors.
However, it's important for locals, especially those with severe allergies, to be aware of the expressed concerns regarding allergen handling protocols. While the staff attempts to accommodate with "clean scoops," the review highlights that their approach might not meet the stringent cross-contamination prevention standards found elsewhere. For individuals with severe dietary restrictions, it would be advisable to communicate directly with the staff about their specific needs or consider the pre-packaged pint options available, though choices may be limited. This is a crucial point for a segment of the local population.
Despite this particular challenge, the general consensus points to "really good ice cream" and "friendly staff." The blend of an authentic soda fountain, extensive candy selection, and delicious ice cream makes Sweets on Third a versatile sweet spot in downtown Baraboo. For Wisconsin residents seeking a charming, high-quality, and family-friendly dessert destination that offers both nostalgic appeal and innovative treats, Sweets on Third remains a prominent and generally well-regarded choice in the local community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Stopped by to try it out, but I wasn’t able to as allergens are not taken seriously. Open nut containers are left over the open ice creams with used scoops on the exterior with pieces of nuts left out. Asked if they had any way to get ice cream that wasn’t exposed to the nuts left out/cross contamination and was told they’d use a “clean scoop”. There was not a separate container for allergen-free scoops or the option to pull a scoop from a new tub. These have been the solutions/protocols everywhere else I’ve ever asked due to a possible exposure with no issues. The only other option was a pint (twice the price of what I was planning to get) and there were only 2 options available. My husband was able to get a scoop and said it was great ice cream, just sad I couldn’t get the flavors or sundaes offered.
July 05 · Jo DavisReally good ice cream. Very buttery and rich with flavors. I had an ice cream soda and it threw them off a bit. I’m guessing they don’t get ordered often but it was well executed and delicious. Friendly staff innovative menu. I didn’t try it but the ice cream nachos special was compelling. The space is a bit cavernous but I got over it pretty quickly once my order was ready. Will definitely be back for more. It’s excellent.
April 29 · Paul HarrisWe did a day trip to Baraboo just to check things out. Last stop was here, and it was the perfect stop to end our trip. The staff was friendly and helpful. Great place to do nice cream date or visit with the family. We enjoyed the environment and historic aspect to a ice cream parlor. We will be back for sure!
May 04 · Samantha PolkaThis place is truly a hidden gem on the Court House Square of Baraboo! We were impressed with all of the old soda fountain highlight pieces and the signage describing their history. The location has been beautifully preserved/refreshed. You can almost imagine a soda jerk from the 50's making your order.Today we were not really hungry and in pursuit of iced coffee, which was brewed fresh, full bodied and wonderful. My one suggestion as someone who drinks the largest size possible and often a refill, 12 and 16 oz cups aren't very much coffee when you add ice. You may want to consider larger sized cups for iced coffee drinks.Although we did not eat ice cream today, it all looked creamy and decadent. We saw it being ordered as milkshakes, waffle cones, cups, sundaes...The customers that we saw eat it from a 2 year old toddler to an oldster apparently in their 80's, was smiling and enjoying the experience. The place was lovely, the staff was friendly, patient, accommodating, quick. If you are looking to support a local business just a short distance from the commercial strip that the Dells has become...head down to Baraboo and enjoy some really good service, an excellent product in a beautiful authentic location! We will be back for the ice cream, as it looks soo good, and all the comments were that it is excellent. And if you are a coffee drinker, their site roasted beans produce a smooth, bold, balanced flavor that creates an excellent cup of coffee!!!
May 29 · Sabrina BauerGood old fashioned ice cream parlor with Ice Cream Shop Ice Cream from Madison WI. They make Sundaes, Malts, and Tin Roof Sundaes. The ambiance is great!
