The Barking Cow Introduce
For those of us who live in Indiana, we know the value of a true local gem. It's the kind of place that feels like home, where the food is made with care, and the atmosphere is always welcoming. In the small but charming community of Gaston, a special spot stands out: The Barking Cow. This is more than just an ice cream parlor; it’s a destination for anyone seeking a delightful treat and a cozy, friendly environment. This article is a guide for fellow Hoosiers, detailing why The Barking Cow has earned a place in our hearts, from its incredible homemade ice cream to its unique local connections. We’ll explore what makes this a must-visit spot for a sweet escape and a taste of true Indiana hospitality.
The Barking Cow has a reputation that extends far beyond Gaston's town limits, drawing in visitors from across the state and even further. The secret to its success lies in its commitment to quality and a unique, personal touch. While they do offer some standard flavors from a supplier, the true star of the show is the selection of homemade ice creams. The owner, Cary, takes pride in crafting his own flavors, resulting in a lineup that is both creative and delicious. One review from a visitor from Colorado highlights this perfectly, calling their Cherry Amaretto ice cream "exquisite and delicious" and noting that it’s a flavor you simply can’t find anywhere else. The passion for creating unique and vibrant flavors is what sets The Barking Cow apart and makes it a destination for ice cream aficionados.
Beyond the exceptional ice cream, the atmosphere at The Barking Cow is a significant part of its charm. Described as "cozy and welcoming," it’s the perfect place to sit back and relax. The shop has a rich backstory, with its name rooted in a local folk tale about a cow that learned to bark to save a farmer's life. This story is just one example of how the owners have woven local history and community pride into the very fabric of the business. The walls are adorned with memorabilia celebrating local history, area farmers, and Wes-Del sports victories, making it feel like a genuine community hub. It's an environment where past and present come together, creating a space that is both nostalgic and forward-looking. This is a place where you're not just a customer; you're part of the community.
The commitment to supporting local businesses is another key highlight. The Barking Cow sources many of its ingredients from nearby vendors, such as using Wick's Sugar Cream Pecan Pie for a specialty ice cream flavor and getting their shortcakes from Concannons Bakery in Muncie. This dedication to collaboration is something we, as Hoosiers, truly appreciate and value. It showcases a business that is deeply invested in the success of its neighbors and the local economy, creating a ripple effect of community support. The fact that the owner takes the time to create flavors inspired by local pies and landmarks, like the "Delaware County Pothole" flavor, shows a deep appreciation for the area's culture and a fun sense of humor.
The Barking Cow is conveniently located in the heart of Gaston at 103 W Elm St, Gaston, IN 47342, USA. This central location makes it a perfect stop for those in Gaston and a worthwhile drive for anyone in the greater Delaware County area, including Muncie and other nearby communities. The shop is a staple of downtown Gaston, easily identifiable and accessible. While street parking is available, the town's small size means that finding a spot is typically not an issue. The location is ideal for a post-dinner treat or a weekend outing with the family, offering a relaxing environment away from the hustle and bustle of larger towns. It’s a place that feels like a discovery, even for those who have lived in the area their whole lives.
The accessibility extends to their hours of operation, which are designed to accommodate both lunch and dinner crowds. The shop is open Monday through Saturday from 11 AM to 9 PM, and on Sundays from 11 AM to 7 PM. These hours allow for plenty of opportunities to stop by, whether you're looking for a quick lunch or a late-night ice cream fix. The welcoming atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff ensure that your visit is always a pleasant one, adding to the overall wonderful experience. The staff’s enthusiasm for their product is contagious, and they are always happy to help you navigate the menu and find the perfect treat to satisfy your craving.

May 02 · Indra IsabellaI recently visited The barking cow and was absolutely delighted by the experience. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, perfect for a relaxing treat. The menu offers a variety of delicious food options, each dish prepared with care and bursting with flavor. However, the true star of the show is their homemade ice cream. Each scoop is rich, creamy, and packed with unique and vibrant flavors that you won’t find anywhere else. Whether you’re a fan of classic vanilla or adventurous enough to try their seasonal specialties, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, adding to the overall wonderful experience. If you’re in the area and looking for a place to indulge in some top-notch food and the best homemade ice cream, I highly recommend The barking cow. It’s a sweet spot that deserves all the praise it gets!
June 04 · ivan gregoryI visited The Barking Cow recently and I was impressed. It is incredibly cozy and had much more space than I thought it would. It has games in it and cool posters, and I think I saw a sheep plush toy, which was adorable. The shake I got was delicious and the staff was cheerful and friendly.I'd definitely recommend going here, even if it's a little bit of a drive.
May 01 · Fantasy & World Music by the FiechtersFantastic ice cream flavors and great food. Very friendly staff! Delicious Wraps - can you tell I love this place? Get a 5 flavor sample if you can't decide because you have lots to choose from.
September 02 · Deb ZSmall town creamery with a big menu of ice cream treats. And food too! We started with a Pop Rock Slushie, burger and fries, and a few games of air hockey... I was frozen with indecision on the ice cream. A flight of 5 flavors for $5 was tempting, Cherry amaretto brownie sundae (homemade brownie!), Sweet and Salty sundae with chips both sounded yummy but I went with the PB Brownie Cookie dough shake. I got the small and only managed half. The flavor selection is amazing including carrot cake, raspberry Creme brûlée, amaretto cherry, butterfly kisses.... it was worth the country drive out. Do check the hours before you go! They are fairly limited.
